Newcomer / Intro Joysticks

Hey there everyone.

I am currently using an Xbox 360 controller (unofficial) for this game on PC. I was wondering is it worth using a Joystick for this game instead? If so can you recommend me good one's?

Thanks

Everyone has a different preferred Joystick, so prepare to experience the highs and lows of the debate.

However as this is the first Flight Simulation type game I've gotten into in years, where i realised my Xbox 360 controller just wasn't going to cut it, I picked up a Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X from amazon for about 34 of the Great British Pound, (or squid as i sometimes call it for my own personal amusement)

Its Cheap, Its Cheerful, the cable to the pc is about over a meter or so in length, and the throttle and stick which fear not can be separated have a cable thats just shy of a meter, i would get out a tape measure and be all scientific, but then i have to unwind the cable. Heres a review i found of someone using it for ED Link. Plenty of buttons and very easy to get to grips with.

Oh and it works well with other games, if you care for that thing.

Now watch as someone recommends the X52 with its £95 price tag

O_O I've been found lol

Funnily enough I was just looking at that. Way out of my price range lol

What the Saitek X52 or the Thrustmaster (Look i just can't be bothered typing it all out) but its an awesome HOTAS (Hands On Throttle And Stick). Also you can find the Thrustmaster cheaper elsewhere than amazon, my flat mate picked his up for about £24 off the eBay.

I'm gonna get a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro today, should be adequate for the job. Might look into getting an X52 Pro later on.

Haven't used a joystick for about a decade, I wonder if I still know how to :)

I used to have a good one when I was a kid, used it a lot for Combat Flight simulator. I'd stick with the controller but it doesn't feel natural using it for this type of game.

3DPro. Thats what I am using and its good enough for me at this sstage. I might get an x55 when I have got my Cobra. But I am just trading. To build a fund and to create a means to build the fund bigger.

I wouldn't worry, the knowledge may be locked away but it will come back, though i miss fighting my old force feedback 2 Sidewinder stick.

And yes while my Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS X (no i cheated i didnt type it, just copied it) is indeed the flight stick i have since longed for, even i was tempted by the X52... until i realised as a student i should save money for liquid courage

it really depends on your budget. i'd love a more expensive stick for the extra buttons (give me MOAR hat switches!) but the thrustmaster t-flight hotas x is working out just great for me at a much more sensible price range. sure i'll probably look at upgrading at some point in the future, but for the price some of those sticks go for it's a sizeable chunk of my monthly savings towards a better car in real life. so my spaceship sports car will have to wait till i have a real sports car (gotta love the burbling sound of the viper :) )

if you're looking at a bigger budget then throw the thrustmaster 16000m into the mix (all the saitek offerings are already in the mix :) ). while it's short on buttons (all those ones on the base are a poor second to ones on a stick or throttle) it does boast the very best sensors not seen in anything below the warthog. it is the definitive in accuracy and as it's based on magnets and the hall effect it is not subject to wear and tear as other sticks are. the problem is finding something to pair it with to up the button count. the CH pro throttle would be perfect but the price tag is up there with the cheaper saitek HOTAS sticks.

Get the Thrustmaster X or if you can the Saitek X52, but geht a HOTAS! The feeling is so mutch better than with a normal joystick.

Just ordered an x52, I understand it can/might have issues but it looks the part and it can be made into a very competitive joystick with a few choice modifications.

Did I mention it has LEDs? :D

I'm flying with my Saitek [somethingsomething] and it's a dream to do. All I'm missing now is some kind of controller for my left hand.
Any suggestions for that?
I am thinking of exchanging it with the Saitek X55 Rhino kit.

I have an X52 Pro, but I prefer using my Logitech Gamepad for Elite. The ships are fairly "slow", so precision is not so important.
Funny how you got the X-Box Controller working on the PC, it's afaik not DirectInput compatible. Cool.

So just for this game, I would probably not upgrade. But if you want to, the x52 is a bit fragile, it's easy to break off something. Other than that, it works fine.

I use the Thrustmaster HOTAS, its okay I would say not brilliant. I have to use it joined up and on my lap as its so big I cant put it on my desk or I wont be able to see the monitor!

The joystick movement is a bit jerky at times but i am experimenting with the stiffness/resistance adjuster to maybe loosen it up a bit.

The only major thing missing that it needs is a second ' POV HAT' on the left throttle stick so you can assign it to the thrusters. I have to use the keyboard for landing etc as there arent enough buttons to do everything on the sticks.

I use one of the lateral buttons (on the throttle) as modifier, so I press that and my hat-switch has a new life (and other buttons too)

There is a simple way to re-use the POV HAT... with the Thrustmaster you can use a key combo to do the same thing...

For example, I use button 12 + other buttons to do the following (less used my me and not "reaction dependent"... I've also adjusted / grouped them to ensure I don't have say boost and landing gear on the same button in case you forget / make a mistake and boost inside the station while trying to deploy landing gear

12+1 (press 12 and 1 together in the bindings screen) = retract hardpoints
12+3 = FSD (I have target mapped to 3)
12+4 = Landing gear (cargo scoop bound to 4)
12+6 = silent running
12+7 = heatsink
12+HAT up = thruster up (R)
12+HAT down = thruster down (F)
12+HAT left = thruster left (Q)
12+HAT right = thruster right (E)

My theory being that when inside the station i don't need to worry about weapons, targetting, flight assist, fire groups or any of that stuff so I fly towards the dock, drop the gear and use the thrusters to land...
