Jump Ranges Compared

There's been a lot of chatter about jump ranges and I thought I'd look for a chart comparing all ships. The closest I came was the Elite Lave Wiki, but it had some holes for the newer ships.

I took the incomplete Wiki info then went to Coriolis.io for the missing data. I then sorted the column for max jump range and here it is. Don't take this as gospel. The base info is off a Wiki page and I am human after all.

Few surprises, but the more powerful combat ships in-game do occupy the lower half of the chart, for obvious reasons. I was going to add synthesis columns with ranges at the various levels per ship, but I do have other work to get done. You can double the max jump range for that in your head.

This will at least give people an apples-to-apples comparison for discussion. I personally see no issues with these ranges. I know some do. The iCutter and Corvette seperation did surprise me. I assumed they would be closer. There is a 30 million price difference, however.

Note: I enclosed the XLS file I created with the raw data in case anyone else wants it. I understand some may not want to download an XLS so I also enclosed a CSV. I had to rename the CSV as a TXT file as the board does not allow CSV extension uploads, just rename it back and you are good to go. If you don't trust me at all then don't download anything and collect the info as I did. Will take you twenty minutes to compile with five minutes to make it look pretty.

Note 2: "Jump min" is a misnomer. It should be New Ship Range as that is the jump range when you buy a new ship.

Cheers.

Interesting, but not exactly unexpected results, no?

One thing I noticed right off, your max jump ranges, not quite what they should be. Anaconda can hit 40LY max range, FDL can hit 20LY, and so on. And min range, you can probably get that lower on some of the ships as well ;)

The issue, the way I see it, isn't with max jump ranges.

Almost any ship maxed for jump range will get across the bubble quickly with a suitable scoop.

The problem is trying to take a ship that is fit for combat any significant distances.

Oh just re-fit where you're at, then refit when you get there! That works OK, but more often than not, the station I'm in has junk for modules, and so will my destination station. So I have to fly to a near-by hi-tech system in the hope that it has the modules I need, then fly to a hi-tech near my destination in the hope that it has copies of the modules I just sold.

Which, takes just as long to do as fitting that crap fuel scoop at the first station and making the hike to your destination.

If high-performing fuel scoops were standard equipment at all starports, I could make do.

Noticed the same thing, the jump ranges are completely borked. The source is either quite old or just plain wrong.

Not to drag up the whole combat jump range thread again. But i don't see why all ships can't have similar jump ranges(per size/mass), with the exception of exploration class.
How much fuel you can carry should be the deciding factor in travel.
That completely solves the "but how is my cargo ship supposed to outrun the FDL now?" debate.
Even fully loaded with fuel tanks, a cargo ship can still travel further than my FDL. Lol
And loaded with a combat but travel capable loadout (no extra fuel tank, but a decent fuel scoop fitted). Transports will still be able to jump more times than me before refueling. I will still never catch up. Because I have to scoop at atleast every other star.

Annnd, that also means I can escort transport ships and not be left behind.

Thank you for compiling that and having it in one place. That Asp Explorer looks like an interesting multi-purpose ship. It's time to head to Li Yong-Rui space and shop.

what is meant by "max jumprange"? you can outfit an anaconda to more than 41 ly jumprange, and an AspE to above 38 ly ... so either you understand max jumprange somehow differently, or your numbers are not right.

So to put it in modern day parlance, The Ford Fiesta is the same length and weight as a Porsche Cayman. You feel the Fiesta should have the same performance?

An 18 wheeler truck carries 600 - 1,000 gallons of diesel and can do 1,200 - 1,500 miles. Average car can do about 500-600 miles on a tank. Are you writing your local car lots complaining about that inequity?

No, the transport ranges shown are unencumbered. With full loads, their ranges drop down significantly.

Again, not my numbers. Take it up with Lave Wiki and Coriolis.io.

Except that Coriolis.io has the right numbers already. I mean anyone can go right to coriolis and sort by the MAX JUMP column to get the correct list, so it seems weird for your list to be so wrong.

Ok, here we go. Lol
Sorry, first off, about the fuel, I wasn't complaining about my FDLs lack of fuel, I was actually all for that. I think it's correct.
My car (Vauxhall 2.0 turbo diesel), can do about 500 miles on a tank. As far as I know.
A truck, can go waaaaaay further. Which is correct. So my FDL should, and does, have a mucher smaller fuel capacity compared to say, a Python. (Sorry, I don't know anything about T6,7,9s).
So, in a 200ly race, wih equal jump ranges my FDL will always lose. Makes perfect sense to me. It's not designed for long range.
If I want to travel further, I have to add a fuel scoop and/or fuel tank, at the cost of some internal combat stuff. Feels like a fair trade off to me.

We don't actually have a modern day equivalent to jump ranges. So your point about Porsche and fiesta doesn't make much sense there, sorry.
But, for my FDL to even jump with almost any other ship in game, I have to take out pretty much everything that makes it a combat ship. No weapons,no armor, no shields etc...
Just doesn't make sense.
It's like the jets that escort Air Force One. Not sure what hey tend to use now, but it used to be F/A 18s I believe.
It would be like saying, you can only escort the President, if you lose the guns, most of your equipment, and we'll replace your armour with tin foil. It wouldn't happen. But they do swap a mount for extra fuel.

I tried escorting a Python with a full hold of cargo, about 160t I think. And he could still out jump me. Even after removing some armour, and a weapon. He could still jump 2ly further. And on top of that, if we got in to a pvp fight, I probably would have been completely useless. Making being there pointless. Lol
I dunno. I haven't looked as ship stats in a while, so I don't remember if my FDL actually weighs alot more than a Python or what.
But something isn't right.

I think I've confused myself enough now.

> Your Vauxhall 2.0 turbo diesel doesn't fold space/time?! You driving last years model or something? :p

Swap out one of those SCB for a fuel limpet and you could join the Fuel Rats as a CAP as well as a refueler, nice build.
Thanks. Makes me look forward to getting the rank to buy one of these battleships.

The 1 jump range is weak, but with all that extra fuel and a size four scoop the overall range looks pretty good I think.

If I can keep jumping, and refuel a little bit each jump, stop every 6-7 jumps for a nice big gulp, I'd be a happy camper - so that vette looks pretty good.
I tried to spec a vulture and FDL similarly, but...

Neither one looks like it has much in the way of legs...
