Horizons Jump, Scoop, Honk, Repeat - I'm so ashamed.

The trip to Jacques is just taking too long. Forget about the CG. I'm two thirds the way there, and I'm not going back to the Bubble for any CG cargo.
Until yesterday, I was scanning the main star and maybe a planet or two in each system. But it's taking too long.

As an explorer I'm ashamed to say that I've started just jumping, scooping and honking.

Take away my explorer badge, I just want to get to Jacques.

Nah, it's fine. My exploration trips are usually at least weeks long (more like months, actually) and I don't scan every system, either.

I honk while scooping, then hit the FSD and while it's charging, I go and check the system map. If there's something that looks worth the time, I cancel the jump and go look. And as far as main stars go, I only scan O, B, A (because I like looking at them) and non-sequence stuff for money.

It's true, that explorer should explore, but I think to actually get somewhere is also important. :D

Take a look at these pictures, for example:

This is a typical near-core situation. Most of the stars there are merely one jump away. Thousands of them. If I was a "true" explorer (whatever that means), I might want to explore all of them, but... you get my point. :)
So don't feel bad for speedrunning it, now and then. You're going to get to enjoy more stuff.

I'm just honk/scooping until I get to about half a tank of fuel. The next star I point my ship toward the star and scan it while my fuel fills up. I'll scan more on the way back.

There's no shame in using the jump/scoop/honk method if you need to get somewhere quickly. If your main goal is exploration it's always worthwhile to scan the main star simply because this usually constitutes over half of your exploration earnings in most systems and it's silly to throw away basically half of your exploration rank/profits. On my SagA trip I scanned the main star and did a system scan in every system I jumped to because I was on an exploration trip and was specifically looking for planets with life to study the system/planetary properties and learn about the procedural generation algorithm. If you're trying to get somewhere for a specific purpose, however, and exploration is a secondary goal then using the jump/scoop/honk method actually makes sense as it doesn't slow you down. I've been doing some long-range trading trips to Sothis and Fehu and I sometimes bring an advanced discovery scanner and use the jump/scoop/honk method without scanning the main star, because my goal is getting cargo from point A to point B and I don't want to slow this down at all. Just because you're an explorer doesn't mean you don't sometimes have to put on your bounty hunter/trader/mission hat and focus on another job at times. :)

Explorers have to travel, too. Nothing wrong with that.

When I'm exploring, I usually jump scoop honk my way out to where I am going and don't start seriously exploring until I reach my target area. Otherwise I'd never get there.

I gave up the jaques run myself.....just way too long just to get somewhere for not much to actually do once there.
plus I was actually falling asleep doing the same old sequence time after time.

the thargoids could show up right now out there and I don't think id bat an eye lid....

they should have just planted jaques out in maia with the rest of the mystery stuff, and not a distance that takes days to cover...

to much monotomy for this old school gamer

This is exactly why I haven't bothered with doing a cargo run to Jacques, it's much too far a distance to be worth the trouble for a CG. Not to mention that most explorer builds are usually not equipped with cargo racks and doing so can significantly decrease your jump range. My Asp in it's current "multirole" explorer build can carry 64 tons fully armed and armored with over 30 ly jump range laden but that's with only an A3 fuel scoop that takes 3 min to fill the tank. I usually use that for some short-range exploration within or slightly outside the bubble but it's not really optimal for a long-range trip. When I do any serious long-range exploration I use a 6B fuel scoop that can fill the tank in 42 seconds but that would drop my cargo capacity to only 8 tons. Apparently I'm not the only player who took one look at the distance and decided against it because the CG progress is basically at zero when I checked the CG info.

Exploration needs definitively some love from FD. There are some excellent suggestions within exploration forum.

That's a problem?

There are differences between Explores and Cartographers.

Scanning everything is like spilling salt in front of a vampire. You will never get where you are going. ;)

I know what the OP means, I feel the same. I'm heading for Jacques and at the start I was scanning everything, then I started to scan the main star and any "interesting" planets. No I'm honk - scooping - scan main star - check system map for ELW or Waterworlds and off. It doesn't feel good but needs must. If I had carried on the way I was going I was never making Jacques before the end of the CG! This is of course based on my casual game playing and by casual I mean 4 hours a week.

How do you detect the earth likes or water worlds without scanning? Do they show up in a different color on the system map? As you can tell I haven't discovered any yet :)

Yes, that sound the Discovery Scanner makes when it scans the system. :) (Reapers, anyone? :D )
Traveling quick from one system to another with activating the scanner while the FSD is charging for another jump, without any further inspection of the system is often referred to a "Honk-jumping"

Ah, I rarely play with the sound on...

I jump into a system and do the following.

1. Move into fuel scooping range
2. Select main star to scan
3. Honk!!!!
4. Check system map
5. Scan any really interesting stuff such as earth likes, water worlds etc. or jump to next system

Now a couple you can do consecutively such as moving to fuel scoop range and honking so in reality the whole lot can be done very quickly. But I feel dirty doing it. I far prefer to take my time and scan everything, that "feels" like proper exploring to me. The rapid "Honking Jump Scan" is a means to an end at the moment. Got to get to Jacques fairly quickly.

EDIT: OF course you don't even need to scan the main star but I like to do it.
