Horizons Jump "smart-positioning" isn't that smart

The new feature of the smart-positioning* when jumping is.. well it's just bad imho.
I almost always find my next star obscured and I need to do a round trip all the time. I find it annoying.

Let me know what do you think, have a great day ;)

*with smart-positioning I mean this: "- Arriving at a star now correctly leaves you in line with the source and destination systems, rather than the previous not-well-defined behaviour
- It is no longer possible to travel through or end up inside another star if you hypespace into a multi-star system. If an intervening star is detected your hyperspace will be redirected onto that star. This process repeats if the new path is also obstructed. Note that you can still end up dangerously close to other stars and get more than a little cooked"

I whined about it at first but people said it felt more realistic. Fair enough it does make sense to arrive at the side of the star from which you came and it does stop you arriving "through" the star but I don't know what will happen when arriving at close binaries (particularly if one is a neutron star!). On long trips, since I am scooping, it is OK - on others it is just "one of those things".

Yeah it's better this way, a slight offset would be preferable so we do not have the next destination target obscured..but is that an easy thing for the devs?

It makes long range trips faster for me, I almost never need to stop for refueling. I also think it makes more sense than the random mechanic we had earlier.

Cmdrs who like to fuel scoop will most likely prefer this method of smart placement.
Actually "meh", with a decent scoop you'll have time to spare after ramscooping your way halfway around the star.

The "new" hyperspace exit location at least makes some kind of sense, before it was just random where you'd end up.

Fun enough, that and the part where you aren't supposed to end up inside the "cones" of neutron stars are a bit broken at the moment, so there will likely be some changes in the (not too distant please) future.

I like it a lot better than the previous random way. It makes sense now.

Totally agree.

If the Nav Computer is to be believed as being a SMART device capable of accurate route plotting, then what we have now would be the expected/desired result.

I frankly don't understand all the whining from the usual small but vocal minority over this change. You are now lined up perfectly to scoop the star upon system entry with no need to deviate from your course towards lining up with the next jump. Its now just one fluid maneuver, instead of the previous crap shoot.

Those complaining need to take a few lessons in REAL route planning.

Flimley

I would add to this that it is really a matter of play style since, when I am using a scoop, all this really does is give me more time to scoop as I align.

The OP is correct, however, that it adds time when you are buckeyballing a route.

Whoa, easy pal.. I'm not complaining at all, I'm just asking opinions.
Anyway, with my playstile, this new system slows me down. I usually use heavy fuel scoops, so I lose a lot of time doing the trip around the star.
But, I have to agree that it really makes more sense now.. a small offest like said by Leper Messiah would be awesome.

but I don't know what will happen when arriving at close binaries

This happened to me twice. You go very close or through the apposing binary to reach you target. Kind hair raising for a few seconds. Makes a louder band sound also.

It is really simple to do a nose dive, or nose up, when entering the system then hit the jump button when the FSD has cooled down. By the time your FSD has charged you'll be well away from the star to point in the direction of your next waypoint.

Not so simple with a big 'conda [squeeeee]
I used to press J as soon as the safety cooldown was over, now I cannot because I'll cook myself

For me it is easier now to jump/refuel/jump because of how you are forced to do that turn around the star so you can go to the next one. No need of a bigger fuel tank or stuff like that if you are also using the stock one in a bigger ship with a good fuel scoop.

So for me it is great this way and a more fluid way to travel compared to the random "drops" that we had before 2.2.
