Just a quick question for those with a rift

what sort of session times are you finding you can play before it starts getting uncomfortable/eye straining etc?

i know all will be different, but just curious as i'll probably get the consumer release even though i'm on 3 monitors and trackir now, was sort of thinking couple of hours on the rift, couple of hours eyefinity back on the rift etc, doable? or waste of time?

cheers.

I rarely get the chance to play for more than a couple of hours at a time. That feels fine to me - although it really does just depend on how you feel that day sometimes.

Some days the Rift just feels really annoying sitting on your face. Other times, it's like slipping on a pair of slippers. Sometimes you really notice the 'screen door', other times you don't.

I wear contacts and that is also a big variable - sometimes they aren't sitting right at that just makes using the Rift annoying. Other times they are perfect and the Rift is like a window into another universe !

Honestly though, I think once you use the Rift you'll never go back to monitors. It's just not the same. Not even remotely.

Honestly once you get the rift I doubt you'll go back to your eyefinity for any reason ;)

So far I've not had any limits in the Rift with Elite, other than having to stop to do stuff in RL. Obviously I would advise that you take it off for a few minutes at least every 3-4 hours, and sometimes I do feel fatigue at around that point, but no more than if i'd be starring at the monitor for the same length of time. In general with sensible 5 minute breaks I don't think many people would have any problem playing Elite for many hours at a time.

There are a few caveats though. Rolling can be unpleasant, especially in stations, so I tend to minimize that. I don't find it much of a problem in combat as i'm normally focused on tracking the enemy ship, but in a station lining up the landing pad by rolling can make me feel a bit queezy or unbalanced. I have noticed though that rolling isn't as bad as when I first started with the Rift, so I guess over time you can get used to it.

You need to be hitting 75fps since the Dk2 runs at 75Hz, any less than that and it can be problematic, but it affects different people to different degrees.

I've had my Rift DK2 for several months now but haven't played Elite yet, except for some of the tutorial missions. I've used it for lots of other stuff, though, and it's never bothered me. Having said that, I only use one eye.

with ED I can play for a few hours before my eyes start getting tired. (old age). other rift games I can only do a few minutes before I start getting ill.
The rift is good for games where you (your character) is sitting down - IMHO

My longest play session in Elite with the Rift is 3 hours. (I would play longer, but I've got needy kids, a needy wife, and a job that I need).
I have felt no eye strain from the rift since I tailored the IPD to my wide eyes using the adapters from VR-Gear. (purchased from shapeways)
Before having the adapters I would get 'uncomfortable' after an hour or so, because one eye was always slightly out of focus.
.
For me, the $15 USD for the 69.5mm adapters has been worth every penny, and now I can honestly say that nothing compares to a well-fitted Oculus Rift.
Just get one, and fit it to your biometrics, it is amazing.

can you post a link to what you bought? I'm curious

I just lost 5 hours tonight and the only reason i got out was because the servers were going offline to update.

The default IPD of the rift is like 62? or something... my eyes are 58, so i am getting those IPD adjusters as well, it is just an attachment that goes between the smaller lens to offset it so the lens in in the middle of the eye.

With it off set, things in the middle might be clear, but the further to the side, the blurrier it is. these fix that, and the consumer version is rumored to have adjustable lens IPD as well

Sure thing!

They sell it through shapeways, a 3D printer shop:

I actually purchased a set of them, from their lowest to the highest spacings.
When I have friends over I have them measure their IPD using the Rift's tool, then I install a spacer (if needed) to quickly tailor the fit for them, and away they go!
.
My wife is on the opposite side of the norm than I am, she needs the 59mm spacers. When I want to show her something amazing I simply click the optics out, switch spacers, and click the optics back in.... and Viola! Nice crisp imagery in both eyes.

If everything is working as expected (no black bleed, IPD feels good, no juddering, etc) then I can play as long as I want in Elite. Last weekend I had some rare downtime where I wasn't needed anywhere, so I slapped on the Rift around 8 PM and didn't stop until I felt a bit tired. When I pulled the Rift off it was 2:30 AM.

Prior to the Rift I had (and still have, just disabled) triple monitors on nVidia Surround with TrackIR. That's nice, and it's still great for showing someone how nice the graphics are in the game, but once I put on the Rift I could tell there was no going back; screen door and difficult to read text included. The immersion is excellent, and the scale is impressive. You just feel like you're there, right there, look down and see your body, try to reach out and touch things. I find it annoys me when the in-game hands fidget and I'm not actually doing that; it breaks the brain a bit to watch you do something you're not really doing.

Now, put me in Alien Isolation and it's a completely different story. I can play about 45-60 minutes before taking a break. I never get motion sick, but that game will give me cold shivers and feel like I need to stop the world from spinning. I've heard ginger helps with this, or motion sickness pills, so I may try that to see if I can overcome. An hour of play and then a break might sound good, but it generally takes me 2 hours or more to recover once I feel sick in A:I.

thanks for all that info guys, was all very helpfull indeed, think I might be going you sooner than I originally thought.
cheers all.

I play for a couple of hours without any issues except a bit of eye strain at the end. I think it's because of the contrast between the dark cockpit and the sharp bright orange HUD.
Think this game is one of the least nausea-inducing Rift games. Have three screens as well - will never go back to them :)

About those IPD adapters - don't recommend them. You attach them to the B-cup so that the B-cup + adapter should have exactly the same height as the A-cup. My set made the B-cup slightly higher than the A-cup, made the screen slightly blurry. Also - whenever you remove the lenses you risk getting dust on the screen. Even microscopic grains of dust is super annoying when viewed through the lenses. My adapters are made of a porous material that sprinkles a little dust when they're attached.

I've done 12 hours on a Saturday in the rift.... But I'm a psychopath.

I haven't had much eye strain, but "grid eyes" is a bit disconcerting after you take off the rift and go into a dark room. Like it was said before, ED is one of the least nauseating games, likely due to the peripheral vision being filled with the static surrounds of the cockpit. But, it may still take a few sessions to get acclimated.

12 hours rifting in ED without problems, but I still get a one way ticket to chunderville, playing HL2 for more than 5 minutes...

I'm another guy who swears by the ipd adapters. My 70mm ipd made it hurt to play before getting them. Downside was it takes almost a month to get them. No issues with dust, just use a can of air like you would if swapping lenses for any other reason. I see no blurring from it either. I also did the screen protector mod to reduce the screen door effect and it is amazing.

Between elite and iracing, I play up to 6hrs in the rift with no problems. Even went as far as taking down two of the three monitors I had been using pre rift. They were just talking up space.

I tried this, and I didn't like the results.
It gave me a 'hazy' effect, did it not do the same for you?
.
Maybe I used the wrong kind of screen protector?
Could you post a link to the ones you used?

I've got the IPD adapters on order and will report back if they make much difference. I measured mine at 67mm so hoping to see a difference. Also did the screen mod with a matte Note 3 protector and found that to help SDE.

I can play for a couple of hours but the thing that stops me is my face hurting or neck strain from looking around for my target.
Very much hope the CV1 is a bit lighter with more comfortable padding.

My longest session with the rift was playing Alien isolation, the frame rate and the image quality in that game is perfect.
Playing Elite for 2 hours is enough to get me a headache and need to switch to my monitor.

I regularly play 3-4 hour sessions with the Rift. I find that after a couple of hours, the biggest issue I have is my face and nose become increasingly itchy.
