Just found this forum, and thought I'd drop in to say thank you.
Thank you for the fantastic Frontier: Elite II and thank you for giving me hope for seeing Elite IV some day. I had given up, but found the Wiki info, taking me here.
It's hard to put my finger on what made me love Elite II as much as I did. Graphics aside, I still hold that game as the best game ever, this solely based on the atmosphere! The use of classical music pieces, and the suspense when entering space stations provides assotiations towards 2001: A Space Odyssey. Of course, you all recognise this. I hope Elite IV will feature this atmosphere as well.
What made the game special for me at the time, in addition to what I mention above, was that I was given a choice for how to play the game. I could jump jump jump wherever I wanted, and there would always be goods to trade, missions to solve and new places to explore. If I wanted to run a straight merchant business, I could. Or I could hunt. Or I could smuggle. Today, this is nothing new, most games hold several paths open for me to walk.
What would I want to see in Elite IV?
Well, I want to see more of the space stations. I want to see more of the worlds.
I want pubs and hotels. Cafeterias and drugstores. Make me feel like I'm always travelling, always visiting.
I don't think more action is required, that's not what did it for me with Elite. Of course, it's needed, but it shouldn't be priority one.
I want to be able to build my spaceship as I want to. Have it look one-of-a-kind, both inside and out.
And, seeing a MASSIVE need for a space-type MMORPG (since Star Wars Galaxies decided to turn into a crap game, forcing roleplayers to leave), I'd say there's a huge vacuum ready for filling.
As a MMORPG: Create american, european and asian servers. Dedicated roleplaying servers also, please!
And don't make it into a game I have to play every day to have fun with. I don't want to walk around with a bad conscience for not having played in two days. MMOs can do that to you.
