Just about over it....

Ok, i've been through everyone elses issues, but i can't get the rift working. Perhaps i'm missing something? I don't know. I'm about to run it over with a ten tonne truck, unless i can get some kind of how-to that starts right from the beginning. Right now, i cant even get it working at all, but the best i've done is had it working for about 5 seconds in game (intro) before i got this:

Needless to say that 5 seconds is all that is keeping the rift alive for now... so yeah, was working, now not working at all, in the meantime though, bedtime.

System specs:
quadcore 3.4ghz
16gb ram
Nvidia Geforce 9800GT (the new one...)

Haven't updated the gfx drivers, as can't seem to pin reliable ones, some say new ones are the go, others not...

You will definitely want up to date graphics drivers, just make sure its the WHQL ones and not the latest Beta (which has issues with the Rift). I've only had ED crash on me when I used direct mode, so make sure to use extended.

First things first though, can you make sure the game will run without the Rift connected? Turn it off and try to load up the game, if it runs normally without the Rift there's either a problem with the unit or the Rift drivers/runtime. If it doesn't run without the Rift either, its a compatibility issue between ED and your system...

No, ED runs just fine, more than happy with ED. Its just the rift messing things up :)

Wait a minute, do you mean a GTX 980 or a 9800gt? Because the 9800gt is ancient and I can't imagine it running anything in the rift.

Thats why i said the newer one, i remember back in the day the old old 9800GT... its not one of them... lol

I highly doubt that 9800GT has enough omph to run Elite with the Rift. I have a hard time running it smoothly on a Duel Core with a GTX 760 with the DK2. The Rift pretty much requires 75FPS to be able to work smoothly and any less will cause judder which will give you a headache/sick/etc. (New/Old, doesn't matter. Anything not Nvidia 400 series or newer is Pre DX11)

Also are you talking Rift DK1 or DK2 here? Does the DK1 still work with Elite?

You can probably play Elite fine without the Rift on a 9800GT, but the Rift's SDK adds a ton of overhead at the moment which requires some massive hardware to overcome.

Even my 3930K and SLI 780's get taxed pretty good when using the Rift with everything Maxed.

Lol what is this thing ? The new GPU is called GTX 980 and there is definitely no 9800GT with 4 gigs of ram.
Really fascinating.

Edit : Just a wild thought but did you maybe buy a knockoff ?
I heard of fake graphics cards before.

I think you mean the runtime, not the SDK. Am I right?

Yeah that's messed up. There is no new 9800GT; check NVIDIA website - it's 6 year old tech with about 1/5 the texture fillrate of a GTX 980. Sorry, it is not going to work with the rift.

Yeah, something is totally screwy with your system to be saying you have a 9800gt with 4gb ram.
You need to open your pc up and see what it says on the video card itself. You may need to completely wipe your video drivers and then reinstall it or you may need to buy a completely new video card depending on what it says.

Guys it's DXDiag. It doesn't read the memory on the GPU itself accurately.
On my work PC i have a 9600GT and it also says 4G in the same screen..

Either way he is using a 9800GT and nothing close to a 970/980 like todays hardware.

Hopefully if the Op spent $350 on a DK2 he would also be willing to spend $200+ for a modern GPU instead of relying on 6 year old tech to try and play Elite. :/

ohh okay, well that explains it then. I don't even know if you can use a 9800gt to run elite on a regular monitor, let alone a dk2.

It "runs" with a 9600GT here so yea it will work, but even on a 9800GT, it won't be a optimal/possibly enjoyable experience especially within a station.

You aren't running ED in Oculus Rift with that card. Sorry. Someone may tell you it'll run, but they don't realize that the Rift will need the scene rendered twice, with a wider FOV (rendering more stuff) and it's gotta keep 75 fps while doing all this. I doubt you could hit 60 fps on low settings with a single low FOV monitor.
