Just came back to the game

Hi everyone,

I am just now coming back to the game, have Horizons but I left just shortly after it came out. I'm more Empire aligned and the old group I played with is essentially gone, so no more guidance. My question is, now back in a Vulture, what should I do? What's the meta at nowadays? Also, are there any groups that are interested with the Empire and willing to take on someone like me under their Wing?

Thank you guys.

Being more of a solo player I can't really help you with groups or what the current meta is (though I keep hearing heat mentioned) I would advise you to start collecting materials and unlocking the engineers. There are plenty of threads in the Horizons /Engineers sub forums to help get you started.

Study up on engineers, set a plan on a build for a ship. Set separate ships aside for mission running, 5000ly exploration and a deticated mining vessel. Cant provide link because im on my phone but there are tons of resources and third party tools to make your life a lot easiers.
Best of luck Cmdr.

Thank you for your replies everyone, I really appreciate it. So I take it that the current meta is, at the very least, to do with Engineers. What about Powerplay, are they worth pursuing now? As I only have about 4 mil in the bank.

IMHO the only useful thing to comout of PP was discount ships and parts. You dont even need to be apart of a power.

So there's no point then? I guess then as a combat pilot a good way to make money is off of warzones or just simple bounty hunting?

I've only been playing for a month or two, but from what I've heard combat doesn't pay nearly as much as it used to -- or perhaps the other ways of making money were buffed so it now seems lower in comparision. That said, if you enjoy combat, you can make a living -- making enough for repair bills and the occasional rebuy. But it probably won't make you rich.

Inara.cz is a great website to find groups of Elite players also.

Bounty Hunting is no longer a turkey shoot it was, so dropping into a Haz RES is actually now hazardous.

i would start at Low RES sites and work your way up, collect drops from ships when you do destroy them as these materials will aid you in buffing ship with the engineers.

But, I would note that engineer unlocks do take some time, so don't think you can get a fully tricked out upgraded ship after a few weeks play, have the tasks to unlock as background things to do and play the game your way.

Well Power play is a time sink or kinda of a weekly chore. If you like the concept of it and have the time is can be decent supplemental income. However if your looking for money... long range trading or smuggling blows that 50 mil a week out of the water. Find a station or system for trading or smuggling, refresh the boards, stack missions and you will be good for income.

So its gone to trading to fund the combat? A lot like EVE then :p

The jump range of a Vulture is a drawback when wanting to upgrade it with the engineers. So is the limited cargo space.
I suggest you get a Cobra or a Diamondback Explorer to do some of the legwork in to get the engineer upgrades. If you do this, make sure you have a decent amount of cargo space in your Vulture when you park it, otherwise you may need to drop some useful commodities to be able to swap back into the Vulture. I'm upgrading a Vulture at the moment, and it's proving to be far more difficult to do than the larger ships I've upgraded already.

I like the concept of it but not a whole lot of time. Thank you very much Demascus, so trading is the thing to go for and then supplement it with my combat. Afterwards when joining a group participate in their activities.

PowerPlay has some serious issues.
But the heart of things is still out on the reddit - there's a sticky in the PowerPlay sub here with the URLs for each of the Power's reddit organisation.

Any of the Powers would gladly welcome you and give you some structure and guidance. And you'll find that the individual groups have a presence there. Start with a power you like and you'll find an active group of players. Just don't defect to Winters. That's a sinking ship.
