Just cosmetics ...

Hello :)

Today I grabbed two ship kits for my Anaconda and yes, it was the 2nd and the 3rd time I even bought some Arx to get them! I know, these so called "cosmetics" were never designed to deliver any benefit in game except making the ship more shiny or looking more aggressive mostly to others. This was quite logic too because if you just got a new paint it would not offer any value beside looking good. But I think it's a totally different thing if you add parts with ship kits. All sorts of parts that are only some sort of "hollow irritation" for those who are not too familar with them? I think if you add bumpers, spikes, wings and plates there should really be some sort of an improvement too. :)

Greetings, Cmdr Imo

I rather enjoy the ship kits and spacesuits. Here's my Anti-AX ship, the Falchion, sporting the new HAZARD kit. Not to sure ARX based content impacting the game beyond the way things look, after all 'pay to win' advantages are never good for any game. Your 'Conda looks mean though, sitting there on that moon.

No, they don't and more importantly the MUST NOT. Ever. That would open the door to a pay-to-win or pay-your-way scheme, something Frontier has always been very clear would never happen, and changing that would be a real casus belli for most players. Your ship looks cool, that is more than enough.

So far, the ship kits make the ship worse. So they do actually have an impact on the ship, by giving it a larger hitbox and (apparently?) in some cases poke through shields and allow you to take damage with shields up (can't verify, but I've heard it).

So if you're looking for cosmetics that have an effect on your ship performance, ship kits will make your ship marginally worse! Pay-to-lose! Exactly as it should be.

Has any of that been verified recently? They've been broken in various ways over the years and their behavior hasn't been constant. Early on with Odyssey kit pieces became solid so you could stand on them, but they were also invulnerable and would block incoming weapon fire without the ship taking damage. Ideally they should be non-interactable to weapons and collisions so they pass right through without affecting hitchecks at all.

I believe they changed them so that they deal hull damage. On their first implementation in Horizons they had no collision, then as you say for Odyssey they became invulnerable and solid, and then I think for balance reasons they made them take hull damage.

Hm. I was under the impression collision only applied on foot. Didn't try though.
I remember back in the Alpha we fell through ship kit parts when walking on our ships, which changed.

That might be true (but would be surprising), but as you say, even pay-to-lose would be ok, what is not is money giving you an unfair advantage. If the ship gets a bit bigger because of some kits, well, why not: after all, the ship DOES become bigger depending on the kit. But Frontier always insisted they don't have any impact.

That kit looks really good on the Krait Mk II and the paint, too. But what actually hinders me to buy this one and/or the Python one is, some parts are blocking off the proper display of the nameplates...

And that's nothing but sloppy design and the nonexistence of a proper quality control ! Nothing more, nothing less...

Not to get me wrong, I really like the industrial look of these ship kits in general and I was one klick away from buying the Python kit when I detected that nameplate flaw...

I got a giftcard with 50000 arx on it wen l first started elite VR 2 or so years ago.
Apart from that pressie at Xmas I've never bought arx.
And I've instructed my kids and grandkids not to gift me arx.
Principles
Seems they've time to make this stuff for monetary gain. And not FIX the bloody game!!
Sod arx!

Remember when console development got canned and we all said that was an indicator of how much could be improved? It's never going to be perfect and recommended spec is never going to be enough.

Besides, what do you think updates 13 and 14 are for?

I don't think the Art team do much fixing of the game, but still need to be paid.
I suppose that they are also a substantial source of income, considering that the game is not a paid for service, but a one-off purchase, and one can play it for years without spending a single penny after the initial cost.
The fact that it's being kept strictly no-pay-to-win is commendable, in fact.

Company's run on cash, if the game makes money then more time will be spent developing it.
Im happy to spend money supporting it, especially with stuff this good.
