I dig the Eagle, but for tryhard mode, my favorite is the GU-97 with any type of laser. I like the range on the beams, but anything will do. The 97 is kinda squish, but it seems to be the most responsive, and has stronger lateral thrusters.
I forget the other parts I use aside from Heat sinks or silent running. If you use either of those right, you can sometimes keep yourself alive long enough to find a shield boost/weapons powerup, but not always.
That’s what it mostly comes down to anyway. Powerup control. You can dominate with base gear, even, since most of the unlockabke parts are hardly upgrades if you look at the stats. Anyone with the weapons powerup is likely gonna smoke you anyway, no matter what kind of hull you have.
If you’re getting stomped by high level players, it’s probably not because of their fancy parts, but because of their experience and knowledge of the arena.
There’s only a handful of venues in CQC. Once you learn them, things will get easier.
I’m not saying skill doesn’t factor in at all, because it certainly does. Unlike open, the ships may be on a more equal level. Even so, A seasoned PvP pilot is still likely to perform better than a casual bounty hunter, or someone just starting out.
