[JUST FOR FUN] What's Wrong With This Picture?

What's wrong with this picture?

Just to clarify,
* This is a screenshot from the Endless War scenario, taken by pressing F10
* The only thing I have done to the picture is to reduce the resolution down from 1024x768 to 800x600 simply so it displays on a forum better
* The picture has not had any image editing done to it
* You can see this mistake for yourself in game (if you have alpha or spot it on someone's video)
* I have submitted a support ticket for this mistake, I just want to see if anyone else can spot it.
* There are no prizes for guessing it.

No guesswork required:

Referring to the weapons being the wrong way round compared to the UI? There's a reason for it, but I'll admit it feels a bit off :p

[edit - first response snarkier than intended!]

What's wrong? Well, first off, it started to load in the browser from the bottom upwards :p Everyone knows images are supposed to load from the top.

More realistic guess:

There are friendly faction ships and neutral faction ships, but no hostiles?

Yep, spot on. Well done.

Well done to Stormprooter as well.

What I found odd-looking was the sun as it is half-covered by a metal beam around the cockpit. It appears not spherical, but rather egg-shaped if you look at the curvature.

The oblong sun shape is simply down to the FOV setting he has.

This behaviour was *extremely* visible in the X2/X3 games, changing the fov influenced how oblong the big space balls got near the screen edges.

Is it just me or does the sun that appear in the top left appear an odd shape?

It's appears so yes :) - it's a quirk of perspective projection, not limited to Elite I'm afraid! On of the render guys may want to jump in with a better explanation than I can manage though :p. It's a similar effect to what you see sometimes notice in screenshots from ultrawide setups or similar - if your eye were at the focal point of the virtual camera the problem goes away, the further you are from that, the more the projection used to flatten the 3d world onto your screen breaks down.

If you want to see it for yourself, take your game of choice with lots of round objects (Portal, a Pool game, Elite ;) ), or even do the experiment in a 3d modeller that has a perspective view (the artifact doesn't show up in the straight top/side/front views as there's no perspective):

- Look at a sphere in the middle of your view, it'll appear round.
- Rotate the camera so that same sphere is in one of the far corners of your screen, not so round anymore I'd bet!

(Note, repeating this does depend somewhat on the game you're testing, some will render spheres as circular sprites or similar tricks which mask the effects).

Ships too far to be on your radar can be highlighted if you're looking at them.

This doesn't make sense to me.

So the green diamond, which can be exactly pinpointed and identificated as a friendly is the wiggle-mess in the radar that is shown as neutral I assume? :)

No, the ship highlighted in green on the HUD is further away than the mess directly ahead of me on the radar.
