Just got a new Rift

OK here goes. I just got a Rift and would like to use it in Elite. I looked through the forums and found there was more that one way to set it up. If you believe I should go through a rite of passage ,read through all the post like you did and I'm lazy for going about it this way, I'm sorry, just ignore me and move on. I like doing things as close as I can to the right way the first time. I have set up the sensors (3), installed Rifts recommended USB 3 card and that's it. My rig is as follows:
Intel i7 4820 @ 3700 MHz
16 gig DDR3-SDRAM
Samsung 500g ssd
Windows 10 Pro Enterprise
DirectX 12
Nvida Geforce GTX 1080 FTW driver 3.8569 (I tried updating to latest driver but it has issues with what I'm doing with switching monitors)

I have not taken the Rift out of the box or installed any drivers for it.
I do not run ED through Steam

Thank you in advance for your help.

Being lazy, too, I firstly installed the Rift, following all instructions, blardy di blardy di blar... got it up and running and had a play in Google Earth.

Couple of days later I installed Dr Kaii's ED Profiler, figured out the default HMD settings and dived in.

If you want, you can twiddle with deeper settings, which I eventually did, but not particularly effective (970GTX/i7-2600K, so I'm on the low end anyways).

Main thing is to get the position of the headset absolutely dead on to get the best experience and clarity.

Good luck and have fun!

OP: Welcome! I hope you have as much fun in VR as all of us on this forum. What is your question exactly? It sounds like you've got the 3 sensors set up (good job going for 3, you'll want them all for room-scale games like Onward and Lone Echo). It seems like your next step should be to take the dang thing out of the box, install the Oculus software, and run through the tracking setup!

You'll want to start slow: Dreamdeck, First Contact, Robo Recall (all of these should be included, you'll just need to install them). When you're ready to dive into Elite, just... do it. Your rig shouldn't have any problems running VR High settings with SS x1 and HMD 1.5. Start there and tweak as necessary if you want.

I just hooked mine and followed the install. Stuff like Dash can wait. I dove right into Elite, fasten your seat belt and be prepared to be amazed!

Did the install and played the little demos. Fired up Elite and nada. All I get on the Rift is the Elite64 taking to long to load check your computer screen. I do this and Elite is loaded and ready to go? Any ideas?

Check in the Oculus settings that unknown applications are allowed (or something like that, sorry, not at my PC right now). I'm assuming you are running ED from the launcher, and because of that Oculus does not recognize it.

This. And if the problem still persists, you may need to go into the Elite settings from your desktop window and switch your graphics to HMD and restart the game. I recall it was a little finicky at first, but once it worked it hasn't broken since.

"Unknown Applications Allowed" in library/filters is on and I am launching from library. In the Rift I see the Elite Icon with the spinning circle. After a moment it shows the path to Elite (which is correct) and tells me it is taking to long to load and for me to take off the Rift and look at my monitor. When I do this Elite is loaded and ready to go on my monitor. I cannot find the option in Elite to change to HMD. I go into options/graphics and it shows my current video card. I see no way of selecting anything else. Tell me step by step how to do this please.

In the 3D section in the graphics settings there is a drop down list. You want to have either HMD (Headphones) or HMD (Speakers) selected (if one isn't already).

I'm pretty sure mine detected that a rift was connected, but perhaps for some reason yours has not...

If this ends up being the problem, use EDProfiler as recommended above.

Yeah, it wasn't there for me either. I did the "official" thing and claimed an oculus key from the frontier website. But what I should have done is use Dr Kaii's ED Profiler tool.

Went with the Profiler tool and got off the ground. Looks awesome in flight and landing is a lot different. What does the "Apply" button do? If I load a custom profile and launch from ED Profiler is that what it uses for settings? When I hit the apply button it asks for a file it can't find and wants to know if I want it to look for it. I guess I'm asking how it works. Are there any setting I should be looking out for? Guess I need to roll up my sleeves and figure it out. Thanks for everyone's help.

I'm far from an expert with the profiler tool, just started using it a couple weeks ago, but I found the HUD color changer to be the most useful part of the tool. Take a look in the official thread for the tool, there's a helpful video in there for getting started.

I'm glad you got up and running! Welcome to a whole new game :D
