Just got a second hand DK2. Need help to get this working properly

Ok I just got a DK2 for very cheap. I thought what the hell I can use it to try out vr and see if I would want to spend £400 on the real deal. But I have now come realise that there is no easy way to adjust the IPD properly for my eyes so it looks utter crap. I can get one eye clear but the other is blurry. My IPD is 68.

I have searched the internet and there is lots of threads most over a year old giving various different info and then other people contradicting this info and im now very confused.

So lets break this down into straightforward questions:

1) Is it possible as of November 2017 to get the DK2 working and adjusted correctly on Elite dangerous?
2) Does steam VR only run via the oculus software? Is there no way to get the DK2 to run by using open vr or something and completely miss out the oculus software?
3) Is there no hacks or tools that still works that I can use to get my IPD adjusted the way it should be using the DK2?
If so how? I seen posts where people said to adjust some setting in a file then other people saying dont do it as its the ADI. Then others saying this is now patched out anyway or didn't work. Others saying I need physical lens spacers but then other people saying thats no use without the software adjustments which is no longer possible. So which is it? There must be some guide or hack that works. Surly thousands of people haven't simply given up on the DK2?
4) Regarding super-sampling and getting the best graphics set-up, What is the difference between in-game super-sampling and the super-sampling in the sdk debug tool? I can see no option for in-game super-sampling at all just the normal graphics settings, high, ultra etc. If I launch a "Normal" instance of ED and try to enable HMD Headphones or speakers via the Graphics menu I am only presented with SBS and Anaglyph, ED currently doesn't detect DK2. Whats going on?

My rig is a Intel Core i5 4670K @ 4.4GHz Overclocked Haswell CPU with 8g of ram and a Sapphire R9-290x graphics card. What settings should I be able to handle on that?

The way I played with the dk2 was with the (at that time) most current version of the oculus software installed. Afaik I couldn't change the ipd, but I did get async spacewarp (which you'll want).

The "official" way to play elite in VR is to go to the frontier website, log in and generate an oculus key, then enter that in the oculus software and redownload the whole thing. It's probably quicker to download drkaii's launcher and use that to launch in vr. Via steamvr also works but I think it performs less.

When I had the dk2 I think I played on mostly medium with 1.25x hmd resolution on my 4GHz 4670K and clocked back 290.

I can only answer on 1,2 and 4 (since my eyes happen to be in a normal ipd range and thankfully have no issues whatsoever with ipd):
1-DK2 is what I still use today for ED (anxiously awaiting pimax) and works fine for ED
2-To run DK2 you absolutely need oculus home running. But you don't need to go thru steamr vr. You can just have oculus home running and then run ED directly from the ED launcher.
4- The in-game equivalent to the oculus sdk supersampling tool is called "hmd quality" which is found in the graphics menu. BUT- the first thing you need to do is set the graphics option to HMD. Then save and restart!
Before you do any of that make sure you see oculus home screen in your hmd when you launch oculus home. If you can't get past this step there is something wrong with your dk2.

I can get it running ok. It just seems the quality is not that go for me. Using your step 4 what is the optimal settings in the in game hmd quality and super sampling?

There is no graphics option for hmd in the menus that I can find the only time i see that is via steam vr.

Yes "hmd quality" is there in graphics options in ED. You need to press the "+" next to quality to expand it so you can see ALL the available options. I set supersample to 1 and hmd quality to 1.5. The resolution will never be anywhere near monitor quality but for me immersion outweighs resolution by far. If you find you cannot handle the lower res of the DK2, I would suggest you not buy the rift/vive becuase they are only slightly better(not enough in my opinion to justify upgrading from a DK2). I would wait for the pimax.

I doubt highly you will have success with older oculus drivers!

na the whole thing crashed when i tried to run it. had to re-install it all! It looks ok but its a bit blurry round the edges.

Does anybody know if the firmware hacks that work with the 3d printed ipd adjusters still works?

Can confirm that the latest Oculus update has ballsed up the DK2 for anybody with an AMD graphics card. Oculus are aware and have stated it was not deliberate.

Guess we are just going to have to sit tight and wait for a fix.

Thank god I have nvidia cuz I would be lost without my DK2.

1) Absolutely can get the DK2 working for Elite Dangerous. Adjusted correctly? If you mean IPD then probably not no.

2) Nope, Oculus software is required.

3) As you read, the file hack was actually ADI which could do worse damage to your eyes. As you have read, changing this was patched and no longer works. Lens spacers are indeed useless without software adjustment as well. I am going to take a stab in the dark and guess that the confusing imformation you have read has come from different dates. If doing research on old threads, date is really important. Especially for a rapidly changing technology like this.

4)When on the graphics settings page inside Elite dangerous, there is a little + symbol to the left that can be expanded by clicking on it with the mouse. This gives you additional options.

If I launch a "Normal" instance of ED and try to enable HMD Headphones or speakers via the Graphics menu I am only presented with SBS and Anaglyph, ED currently doesn't detect DK2. Whats going on?

Normal is only an option if you havent started either Oculus Home or Steam VR (which starts oculus home). Without either, the vr runtime is not running. So no VR. There is no getting around this.

Im sorry to say you will not be able to get Elite Dangerous running in VR with the outdated drivers either. Have just read that post on AMD graphics cards. That totally sucks for anyone with one. This is really bad news too as considering the DK2 is no longer supported, a fix may not happen at all.
