Newcomer / Intro Just got to Felicity, just "invited" so far - next steps?

Made planetfall. Not very elegantly but got there. Felicity says "hi". Looking around, there is no clue as to what to do next so I had a quick look at the Wiki. It appears she needs some meta alloys. It also lists some places to find them. The thing is, how do I find the Pleiades sectors? Or Wjitchhead? Or, indeed, any other. Looking at the galaxy map isn't yielding much. Or am I barking up the wrong tree? Perhaps I'm just barking.

Darnielle's Progress in Maia system is the only place that sells meta alloys. But someone might be able to point you to where to find them out in the wild.

Thanks. That also showed me just how far away the Pleiades are... engineering looks like some far off goal at the moment. Perhaps I'll stick to data missions.

Had this same problem with my son starting to play recently - he wanted to know where to get meta alloys from and, for the life of me, I cannot remember where I got some from to unlock Ms Farseer yet I must have got them from somewhere!

You can unlock other Engineers without FF, though - eg. The Dweller.

I think you can get Meta Alloys from Barnacles. Find a Barnacle site that is in ‘bloom’ and shoot them from your SRV as you would with rocks when surface prospecting. They’ll fragment just as rocks do and provide a range of goodies.

I’m not currently in game so can’t provide the bookmarked sites that I’ve found them. There’s a website, possibly a Github jobbie, that provides a list of sites and when they’re flowering which is very useful. When I unlocked Felicity I bought what was needed from Darnielles Progress as I was desperate to upgrade my FSD and go out exploring.

I’m pretty sure that ‘in bloom’ and ‘flowering’ aren’t the technical terms for Barnacles ready for harvesting but I’m sure you understand what I mean.

For your sanity, treat unlocking engineers as a long term ongoing side project. Focusing solely on must-unlock-now will almost certainly drive you batshatcrazy. But... do Felicity ASAP, the FSD range boost you get is well worth the trek to Maia, and will make everything you do that bit faster - exploration, missions, trading, CGs, unlocking other engineers, etc. Oh, and unlock the Dweller too - engineering weapons is fun!

Good point. Felicity’s upgraded FSD on a half decent jumper really does make the Bubble smaller which in turn makes unlocking Engineers so much easier. I only had Farseer and the other FSD engineer unlocked for quite a while but once I decided to target a couple for specific blueprints they opened up fairly quickly.

Don't forget that Elvira can upgrade your FSD too - Going to Cheranovsky City station in Ngurii system to buy 3 Soontill Relics can be less daunting that the trip out to Maia. You just need to travel 300 Ly from your start to get the invite from Elvira.

I'm guessing your current ship doesn't that much jumprange? As the others have said, unlocking Farseer for her jumprange upgrades will make unlocking other engineers far less tedious.

The cheapest ship to use is a Hauler. 430,000 credits for this loadout with roughly 28 Ly jumprange.

I do recommend an Advanced Discovery Scanner instead of the basic — but that's another 1,5 million.

If you can afford it (around 10 million), the Diamondback Explorer with A-rated FSD has an unmodified jumprange of over 36 Ly.

You'll likely be going to Maia more than once. First time for the meta alloys, and later on you are going to want to meet Prof. Palin. When you see what it takes to get to the Prof, you wish they were all as easy as Felicity.

Thanks for that, it's gives me a little perpective ;). As I'm new to the game (only a few weeks) I suppose I shouldn't expect to be quickly able to do all the stuff veterans of many years have already accomplished!

Onward with credit accrual!

I remember my first invite. I didn't trust her. I thought a trap.

also i didn't know of the fast route option on map at that point. So i did 80 jumps to her, then over 100 to maia.... Oh those days, bubble seemed massive. then you realise how small it is..

You can combine the two - once.
- outfit a ship with both ADS (Advanced discovery scanner) and DSS (Detailed Surface Scanner). That will set you back ~ 2 MCr. for the scanners, but you'll make that back in the first 15 minutes
- go and visit http://edtools.ddns.net/expl.php?a=v&f=LHS+3447&t=Maia&r=30
- fly that route, scan all the systems on the list (ADS) and all the listed planets in these systems. Each of them is worth on average at least half a million
- when you arrive at the Pleiades, get yourself a SRV and some cargo space (or bring it along from the start), then look for a "ripe" Barnacle from this list https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...3GQhC5KT-o9u05ihWKXebt4BcM/edit#gid=223643326 (preferrably undefended - the list also shows how many Meta-Alloys - MA - you can harvest), land, shoot the spikes with the big melons on them, collect the melons (those are Meta-Alloys, the smaller ones can also be shot and collected to yield various engineering materials). You can sell the MAs at a tidy profit. Of course, you can also buy one MA at Darnielle's Progress in Maia. Jsut don't buy more than one, you'll make a loss selling them.

if you fly in open, you'll have to be a bit careful in Maia itself. Maia is an Anarchy, and several less legally bound players consider it their home system. Enter at your own risk, so to say.

Brill. I'll do that - sounds a fun plan. I think I gave you "kudos" or whatever the equivalent on these forums is. Cheers!

Maybe I should add:
- if you get killed before you hand in the exploration data (Interstellar Cartographics conatct), you lose it, i.e. you'll have to scan again
- if you hand in the exploration data at Felicity's place, that should be enough to lift you instantly to level 4 or 5

Well... there are ways to go from sidewinder to fully a kitted Asp in less than 48 hours and probably less than 72 to Anaconda but its kind of extreme and you would play like a bot. Loop after loop of predesigned behaviour to achieve certain things. Its not fun at all... Besides that, the time you need to achieve certain milestones is rewarded with experience which you dont get if you become rich super quick. So long story short, you can do the road to riches but dont overdo it and search for other activities that make money and are fun for you.

After the rtr became a thing, after people realised they can jumpstart new players with multicrew and bounty hunting, making credits became easy. I was a veteran who said do this do that and then you are rich but now I say do the rtr just to get out of the sidewinder and to level the engineers. Besides that its learning by doing. Otherwise you have an Anaconda after 3 weeks and dont know what the hell you should do. I know it because I earned it and you cant just copy and paste that experience to new players. Go around, take a look at humanity in 3304, the rtr will direct you around in the explorer profession but do the other two on you own.

Ps: the Pleiades are not far out. Thats like the distance from you door to your mailbox. You'll get a feeling for it after you travelled a bit.

Think I trudged out to Maia for the MA's, stopping off en route to do missions.

My voyage out to Sag A and back yielded enough explo data to fully unlock Farseer. At L5 you get her homemade chocolate cake and beer too!

Seriously, the subsequent rolls (under the new system) were enough to get my AspX up to ~47LY laden, good to go for Beagle Point. Unfortunately I ran out of materials for the last two rolls at L5 which would probably have taken me up to 50.

Going to head out to the Pleiades soon but saving for an A class scanner first. The planetary scanner will have to wait. Only have 1.7m credits!

Then do the first couple of scans, double back to the nearest system that sells the DSS, sell the cartographic data and buy the DSS.
