Just had my first real ‘oops’ moment

Just a quick story to share, for the new comers its meant to say it happens to all of us, and for the experienced, feel free to share your oops moment.
I had recently set out on an expedition to explore the Orion Arm / Spur, and beyond. I was approximately 10,000 light years out with lots of very interesting scan data when I found a little planet 10 light seconds away from the nearby red dwarf. Upon closer inspection it had a good cross section of materials to pick up with the SRV including Arsenic at a 2.3% concentration so I thought why not.

A couple of notes here:

(a) I’m in a DBX
(b) I’m not running shields
(c) I’ve reduced my thrusters for longer range

So everything is happening like I have done hundreds of times before, I have my approach angle, hit the glide just right and exit the glide about 9 KM’s up. This is where it happened as I was flying down I looked at the gravity and it was 0.9 so nothing to major to worry about. I hit boost to get me down to the ground and this is where it all went wrong. Before my boost ended i.e momentum, inertia, for some unknown reason, that I still don’t understand this morning, I turned flight assist off. WHY?

My DBX fell like a rock, I tried to pull up and boost away but the boost was still changing and well I hit the ground and my exploration was over and rather than hundreds of first discovered and millions of credits, I was at the rebuy screen with a tab of a few hundred thousand.
Oops.

Ooops. I've never (yet) accidentally turned off flight assist, though it should be easy to accidentally hit the Z key, my left hand is usually on the throttle, not the keyboard.

Thankfully I've never had a complete RUD yet due to unplanned lithobraking, though I did come close once or twice.
I took some severe hull damage once due to a mistake in timing on HD 148937 3
On another occasion I came in a bit too hot on Kyloalks DL-Y g17 4

Then of course there are the 'oh crap' moments, like when you jump in between two or three stars that are so close, you're already scooping as soon as you exit hyperspace, your temp is at 90% and climbing and you see a stellar flare in your side window coming from the star behind you.

I actually enjoy the oh crap moments, it breaks the monotony and really lets you flex your "what do i do now muscles". Anything in the game that gets the heart racing is a good thing. Now my FA moment, well I did that on purpose, I don't know why, I don't know what went through my head that said to do that, but I did it on my own free will and well, the results were not that grand. I have skipped off the ground before in my clipper (it had shields) when I failed to notice the gravity of the planet and survived but this was just a pure kiss the ground and here is the re-buy screen.

I feel your pain.. I really do..

I made some major screw ups when I was first starting out.. But kudos to you for your attitude and not blaming the game.. If you around the Iota Persei area, let me know I will drop you a few million of gold for you.

This is why I always bring a shield, and I don't under-size my thrusters (well, not anymore)... lol. :) But yeah, I've had a few close calls. So far my deaths have been due to doing stupid things inside the bubble, or near a base, rather than out in the field. The kinds of mistakes I make while exploring are usually along the lines of hitting a star's exclusion zone because of over-aggressive scooping (and I keep the orbit lines turned off, and so I don't see the exclusion line), or approaching a planet too rapidly from supercruise, and thus take damage dropping to normal space. Things like that.

LOL thanks, I'm by no means destitute so I will politely decline the generous offer. The rep is appreciated however. I think I am going to alter my thinking in what makes an exploration vessel and go for less distance and more versatility. My Clipper explorer had a great balance I think for all of that. Also, since I don't want to start a new trip before I go on vacation in real life, I may practice FA off planet landings in a sidewinder.

Both for owning your own folly and for that "I wonder what'll happen if I ..." moment that we all know so well :D

Much respect, Commander.

Yep been there done that
Did a belly flop just a few Ly from SgrA* on my first trip there, whilst taking a selfie with the old camera!
Just wasn't paying attention - an expensive lesson.
Fly safely Commander.
