Just noticed each station has a different Commodity Market

I had thought the commodities market applied to the entire System you're in, but I just recently tried cruising across multiple stations in a single system and found all their Markets were different. I'm thinking this could mean that when the Galaxy trade map shows an export route it could be from any one of the specific stations in a system? This might explain why whenever I follow an export trail on the Galaxy Map, the commodity I'm looking for never seems to be available? Thoughts?

I think you're right. I'm not in game to confirm, but from memory, systems can different economy types - so you might get Refinery / Agricultural. When this happens you'll find some stations that are agricultural and some that are refinery, visible when you click on them in the system map. So the trade route on the galaxy map is not necessarily relevant to the station you've landed at.

I'm not sure how this relates to the import from / export to information in the market, this may be system based rather than station based, hence the apparently incorrect / nonsensical information that seems to show sometimes.

That is 100% correct. It is also possible for different stations in the same system to have different economy types (Ind, Agg, HT etc). A savvy trader could find a profitable trade route within a system.

The ai trading is a bit... off right now.
Still, I think this is a greater cause when it comes to all the ''Trading is BORKEN FD fix nao'' complaints.

Also note that if there are several stations with the same economies, they can still have different prices. A good that is in high supply on one station doesn't have to be on another, even if it is produced there too.

That is correct, there can be multiple different station types / economies within a system and the galaxy map will be a generalisation catering to the system as a whole.
The system map will help you narrow it down but there can also be multiple economy types at a single station just to make it a little more tricky ;)

The current bug with trading has more of an effect on the consumer side, so those who normally 'demand' the item may have a 'supply' of it instead..

Edit - but that doesn't mean you can't make money out of it ;)

yup, the group i'm in has been in system trading and making between 500 and 1000 credits a tonne just hauling between stations in the one system.

Yes, I think this non-obvious setup has caused some people to blame the game for inconsistencies.

In fact, check that, I know it has, because I was one.

That said, there are cases where an exporting system's best offer is worse than the importing system's best bid; FD are investigating this, and suspect it's due to AI trades swamping the markets (or so I believe, at any rate). However, the good news is that to the best of my knowledge that issue affects only prices. For trading-based missions, if you just want to find any system selling the goods, regardless of price, I believe the map/trading interface will tell the truth.

My biggest gripe with the game has been that when I am looking for a specific commodity and I head to a system shown as an exporter, I very often find none available. If this is explained by the fact each station in a system is different Market-wise and thus you might need to check them all for what you need before you find it, then I owe the Galaxy map an apology.

I can now confirm this is the case. I had been looking for Algae, HE Suits and Personal Weapons for ages. I'd tried various systems marked on the trade map as an exporter and repeatedly found none for sale. I have just retraced my steps but this time visited different stations in those systems and I found exactly what I wanted! So, apologies to the trade route map for bad-mouthing it elsewhere.

I've found that stations closest to a ringed planet's mining zones tend to have a larger stock of metals than others in the system. It makes sense that the AI miners would go to the nearest station to offload and it can make for some nice intra-system trading.

Precisely.. :)

Right on, Commander :)
