Just Really?

The lack of any kind of story content. I mean seriously put yourself in the seats of the new players coming in today for the first time. The game loads. then you either start or do tuts. if you do tutes they just show you how to fly and manipulate. If you play your put in your ship and bam your off. BUT BUT WAIT. What do I do where do I go. where is the beginning of the game story scene? What got me here? who do I fight? what side do I choose and why? what is each side fighting for? what is there background? I could keep going. The only thing they know is that ED is a multi play (not really true by the way) online universe with 400 billion stars that all have the exact same 3 different looking stations with almost the exact same missions scattered around it with a dying emperor on the empyreal side. that's it. I don't think it would have been that hard to put in a title screen with a storyline so players can choose wisely there path. Remember not everyone was like us and played the original and most have no clue about the game. Oh I'm sure they have already heard the It's all in your own imagination thing or it's what you make of it. Not these days. Fd needs to step it up players want something to fight for whichever side they choose. Bottom line just give them more INFORMATION all the way around.

Ah, modern gamers. Too used to being spoon fed through a game.
.
Got some bad news for you - Elite has no "Press X to not die" quick-time event scenes.
.
[Edit]
Ok, this comment wasn't one of my best. I feel I should clarify my thoughts:
I actually agree with the many comments that Elite is pretty unaccessible to new players, but reading the OP immediately but a vision in my head of endless cutscenes and intros that are often in modern games and that just filled me with horror at the thought of Elite being ruined by them, and that led to a hasty, rude post. Sorry for that.

You didn't get a manual for life either. It's a do what you want game. I'd suggest the game is more enjoyable if you have an astronomy interest. Wanting to go and see Betelgeuse just because is part of the game. As for story and factions, the more you play the more it emerges.

It is said everywhere, there is no direction given. You can do whatever you want, everyone should know this before buying the game. It's not like there's tons of material explaining how the game works. YOU choose your path, YOU choose your factions, YOU choose what you want to do.

Deal with it, it's not like anything else has been promised.

I dont like being told what to do. I want to go where I want and do what I want, be nice when I want, and kill noobs when I want.

This game is superb. Set yourself a goal, you dont need to be told what the goal is. I am trading, doing bulletin boards so I can get a Hauler, then a Cobra MKIII. These are my goals, not goals set by the game.

Hmmm, to some extent I agree with you but then again this is what Elite has always been like. Maybe this game isn't for you, maybe it is and you just haven't given it time. I agree its difficult to get into but it is a great game but its like learning to drive a car to begin. Be patient, take deep breaths and slowly learn to master the game.

No, he didn't. But most people at least go to school to learn what's what. If nothing else, you've got parents unless you're extraordinarily unlucky.

Anyway, a little direction isn't a bad thing. Of course, you try to add anything so that there's actual weight behind your choices (You know nothing of any faction or why any of them matter.) and people start up with their "spoon-fed modern gamers" spiel like a broken record. Doing what you want is great! Not having any reason or purpose TO do anything is bad. It's poor design.

That's what many of us around here firmly believe is wrong with modern videogames. There's no sense of imagination. ED gives you a key to it, you do the rest.

Sorry to say, but this game does not sound like it's for you.

No quest markers, no magic arrows, OP enemies etc. I think people will get into it more so than a linear experience.

ED is not your normal kind of game, its made by a team inspired by a guy with a vision of the game he wants to play. He invited a bunch of people to help make that vision a reality, so yes some aspects of the game may seem unusual, and yes these days having to create your own story with a set of tools is unusual, but once you get the hang of those tools its also very fulfilling. The universe is there you just have to work out what you want to do with it. I find it fun.

No cut scenes? Thank goodness for that. They are usually awful and drag on. There's nothing worse than having to sit through endless cut scenes droning on when you want to play the game.

I'm sorry, exactly what "sense of imagination" is there to Elite Dangerous? What are you imagining, and why? A sense of wonder at all the stars and places to find, sure. But imagination? That word doesn't seem to apply at all here. Not having sufficient information does not equal "more imaginative."

Apart from learning the basics via a tutorial or two is all i'd ever expect from this style of game and frankly there's enough info out there already about the game. Learn by doing :)

Don't just read my story, read the rest as well... https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=23854&p=1172853&viewfull=1#post1172853

The Human Brain has the ability to fill in the blanks. It's why some people whose body is going wrong see leprechauns and other things that don't exist. Having the ability in a game like this is mind-expanding stuff. :D

(disclaimer - this is my opinion...)

The OP is right to an extent. The New Player experience is terrible. There is no explanation of lore whatsoever and arguments against some kind of introduction are frankly ridiculous.

I don't get it. You can role play and make your own story up as you go even if the game already has one. People do it in MMOs all the time. A lack of information doesn't foster imagination, it hurts it! You have less information about why the powers in the universe are... well, powers. I guess that means you can imagine them to all be crazy giraffes, but imagination mixed with good writing is in my opinion far better than "fill in the blanks yourself" mantra of old games, which were only that way due to hardware limitations.

I mean, if you're that down for imagination, grab your flight stick, close your eyes and make up your own universe.

"But the visual aid helps!"

So does having more information! Don't want it? Don't read it! I can't choose to not not read it, though. So you'd be just as happy either way, and I'd be screwed. Yay? (Also I'm not asking for cut-scenes like the OP, they really don't belong, but some sort of story and background info? A codex, perhaps? Yeah, gimme.)
