Just started - need help - lost

So I just picked up the Beta today and am thrilled to be finally playing, but totally lost.

I accepted a mission from Azeban? station, then tried to exit the station and was killed by "Azeban City" for some unknown reason.

I started again, still in the dock and left the station, this time alive, but was unable to determine how to complete the mission.

I'm supposed to find a Harvester, and that's all I know. I don't know what it is or where to find a harvester, nor is there any guidance.

It would be nice if I could somehow auto-lock onto the mission area, but I don't see this as one of the billions of control options.

Anyone?

if you are asked to supply a harvester than you have to go to other stations to find one to buy, then fly back to the original station to turn it in.

It will grow on you

Not to worry, fellow Commander. The learning curve is fairly steep, but feel free to just try different things. My first issues started with my joystick mapping, but once I got that all figured out (after about 2 days) things started looking a little brighter.

As for the missions, my initial take is that while they are an interesting side bar to the beta, they seem to me fairly insignificant. The initial goal is to make a few clams to fatten the wallet by trading. Each system has a type of economy that it is associated with, so with your harvesters; maybe try agricultural systems...or extraction systems. You may make a few dinero. Take the missions from time to time, but Haul, Haul, Haul! Then you can make some decisions on the best ship upgrades for your preferred style of play.

Explore and Enjoy!

I'd recommend you start by playing through the solo missions to learn the basics of how to control the ship. Don't worry about doing all of them, just play around in the first few until you get the fundamentals under control.

Elite Dangerous is not a "jump in and start playing instantly" game. Neither is it a game where you control an avatar and there is a lot to learn, but the controls are just point and click. It's a game where your own skill is critical to the gameplay. Don't approach it like an FPS or a MMORPG, it's more like a flight simulator with extensive MMO and RPG elements.

I've a feeling the trading aspect of the game will improve for final release. It does seem fairly basic right now. I can certainly see market reports being made available on other stations and systems.
