Newcomer / Intro Just started: some questions

Howdi,
I just started the game. Read the tutorials, but something seems to be missing (or I am missing something hehe).

Ok, starting station is Trevithick. There is 1 msg on the bulleting board. I don't see a list of available goods for trading. And I cannot find a galaxy map (while docked). So what am I supposed to do? Just leave the station and fly around? Take that 1 job from the board? I'd rather pick a destination while docked, but can't find the option.

Also when I look at the ship upgrades available, every thing says '(loaned)' Err??

I feel the fact that there is no commodity market at Trevithick is deliberate... it discourages you from returning once you've left it. Since lots of commanders start the game there it can get pretty busy so they don't want new players using it as a trading base as well.

Where are you trying to find the map? It is on your ship's computer so I don't know if you're trying to find it in the station services screen. Press whichever button is mapped to the left-hand screen in your cockpit and the first tab will be navigation with options there to load up the system map or the galactic map. You can select a destination for hyperdrive from the galactic map, or you can select a destination from the same system using the list on the right hand side of the navigation tab (you can't select a destination from the system map).

All the modules in your starter Sidewinder are indeed loans so that you get no money back if you sell them. This is to prevent exploits where you sell it all, leave the station, self destruct and then respawn back at the station with a ship full of modules to sell again.

IIRC I didn't take any mission in Trevithick, I just left and flew to Worlidge Terminal for more of a choice of things to do.

Hi,

Goods for trading should be shown by clicking the Commodities. Have you clicked/selected this?

Galaxy Map should be shown by pressing the Key you have bound to show it. Check the Key Bindings, under options.

The loaned being shown isn't unusual as it's the ship you start with.

Hey.
I'm new too! The bulleting board seems to update every 5-10 mins or so, it's a case of coming out, going in to refresh it.
Galaxy map on mine is M key. Pretty sure that's standard mapping.
You can pick a place to go by looking left so it brings up navigation and it will show nearby stuff, other stations, rock belts etc and other systems you can reach. Then it's a case of locking target, lining up and jumping.

Very basic but I hope it helps

Thank you all.
I was trying to find the map in the station screen. Since it would be logical to do all trading and find profitable destinations there. Can't seem to enter the cockpit while docked. So leave the station and than use the map?

For Galaxy Map press 'm' or what ever key you have bound to it. You can pull this up at any stage, even while flying!!

Pre-set key bindings should have the left and right cockpit panels on keys 1 and 3, and a zoom to the middle of the cockpit on 2. Assuming this is the case, hit 1 to see the left hand navigation panel. You'll need to use cursor keys to move the highlighted item. Bottom left corner are links to Galaxy Map and System Map. Hit enter with Galaxy Map lit.

As others mention, it's possible to set different keys for different functions. For example, I bind "End" (next to "Home") as my Galaxy Map key. There is no obvious way to bind the System Map (not that I've looked hard).

Come on guys, the galaxy map has no default bind. OP - go into your control menu and bind a key for it.

Did you watch any of the tutorial vids? The galaxy map (and just about all the important info you'll ever need) can be access through your ship's computer. Those screens the left and right of you in the cockpit... I don't remember the default binds... 1 and 4 I think? You're going to need to familiarize yourself with these screen and all the tabs on them. The left one is navigation and shows all the stars/planets/stations/ships/ect.... you also request docking through the contacts menu. The right panel.. your systems panel... is.. well... it's your systems. Turn modules on/off there, set fire groups, and manage your power. If you haven't watched the tutorial videos you're definitely going to want to.

When you've learnt how to navigate, get out of Trevithick and go the Eravate system. It's mixed industrial and agricutural so you can trade in the same system.
Ackerman is the agricultural and the others are industrial. So you can take tea/coffee/grain from Ackerman to any of the other stations in the system and crop harvesters / biowaste back to Ackerman.
It's small beans but a place to start and make a bit of money to upgrade your Sidey.
I just started a week ago and am doing this for a while till I think of more lucrative things and routes.

Thanks again. Made it in one piece to the local trading station. As for the controls: I installed a binds file for the logitech extreme 3d joystick, but it is flawed. had to reconfiger the supercruise buttons and the left/right menu buttons. Guess I have to look into it further for galaxy map access in trading station.

You can view your navigation and systems panels in the station. There's a button at the bottom left of the first tab of the navigational panel for galaxy and system maps. You can also go into the controls and bind a key for Galaxy Map. I wouldn't blindly trust a keybind file, there are so many controls you really want to go through them and customize them yourself. I use an Extreme 3D Pro as well and it fits the controls well, I just need one more button to retract hardpoints
