Just started!!

I backed this ages ago, and this weekend, I finally got to play - without ridiculous commitments like family and work getting in the way.

I have noticed several things - I dont think they are bugs or anything, just observations:

1. My first Federal Navy mission required me to donate 12000credits worth of stuff! I had just spent a bunch on my ship (Eagle), and was expecting to get paid for buying 'personal weapons'. Those s.
2. Upgraded cargo to 4T. FOUR??? How on earth do I get more space? I want to buy and fit out a serious Viper, that means more aggressive trading.
3. Base weapons are SUPER-CRAP. Awful. I couldn't take out a family pet with these crappy blasters.
4. I have traveled far. Well to Sol at least. Not one person has tried to pick a fight with me. Not one. Also, only one Interdiction - which I evaded reasonably easy. I dont know what an Interdiction is yet.
5. Docking Computer. Oh dear, its a bit random really. It does land better than me, but otherwise, its almost a liability, and it takes a while.
6. I think I miss my galaxy discovering unit that I had to get rid of to fit the docking computer. Can't I have both in the Eagle?
7. If I can't do the Viper as my first new ship, is a Cobra reasonable? IIRC, the Viper's are tricky to purchase - i.e. limited systems.

So, at last, I join you fellow commanders.

Oh, and has anyone met any NPC named Keene yet?

Welcome Commander! Regarding your first point, if the mission icon is an open hand they're on the earhole and want it for free. Rep gain only :D

Well, as I mentioned, my ship is having a hard time shooting down anything larger than a family dog, so I suspect I won't be doing anything other than handing over precious goods for a while then lol.

Where to start... Hmm...

1. What Fiach said

2. Additional cargo rack or a bigger ship

3. Yes, yes I agree

4. The voyage from the starting systems to Sol isn't that perilous. Spend some time in an Anarchy system with a bounty on your head and see how long you last. Interdiction is someone (NPC or human) trying to pull you out of supercruise.

5. Get rid of the docking computer and learn how to land. Waste of space that thing is.

6. Basic Discovery Scanner - yes you should be able to have both in your Freagle

7. Cobra is more expensive then a Viper, but a Viper is more specialized then a Cobra. The outfitting costs for both are comparable. Don't let those "limited systems" fool you. My Viper eats Cobras for breakfast.

Combat takes a while, and actually the Sidewinder with its two little blasters, or even the freeagle with its little fixed blasters is very capable with a bit of practice. In the last wipe, I started out by making my first 30k or so with bounties without upgrading my sidewinder one bit. So bit of practice and it will seem easy... also recommend a controller or joystick if you are not using them already.

if you got rid of your shield you could fit another cargo rack (8T). just try to not crash into things. :D
interdiction is another ship trying to pull you out of supercruise (warp) normally to steal your loots or the cops pulling you over to check your boot.
lose the docking computer, it's slow and crap. and gives you more room for cargo (2T) :)
cobra cost 3 times the price of a viper, and i can't say i've noticed it being particularly rare, maybe it's just where you are.

practise combat in the free sidewinder, don't bother upgrading it, so if you lose it just get another free one.
practise your landings minus the docking computer as well. :D

I am comfortable docking myself. I sometimes get into this goofy scenario where i am on the landing bay, and twisting and turning until it accepts that I am dead center. With all the scraping noises etc.

I recalled the docking computers of old, where you could hit the dock button, and hit the time super fast forward and dock in seconds. This time, there is no time fast forward! I will be ditching the docking computer. Thats not a problem. Expensive waste of space. Next time I am playing, its sold!

I used to be quite a pro at in flight combat, (with Viper), looking for 30+ thargoids to remove from the skies, so I look forward to some serious combat. Just got to get the weapons for the job.

Also, I know Sol isn't far, but finding the jumps and the general direction to point myself in took a while - also, learning how far my fuel will take me, and not having to dock at every stop on the way has changed my flying path's. I will be taking a long trip over to Achenar, Facece and the Vequess (sp.?), IIRC, there's always some idiots trying to shoot me down there, plus there used to be a stack of mission runs that were pretty straightforward too.

Aaah, the old days! I am pretty excited by the game - its cool!

WTG Frontier. I waited a LONG time, and now, my pc is going to be working its ass off!!

You can use your starter ships to build up a starter nest egg and to learn the game. Once you feel more comfortable.. work up to a larger/better ship. Always plan ahead and keep spare credits to pay for replacement insurance and restart trading. I'd suggest first aiming towards a fast Viper (dogfight focused), or a multi-role Cobra. When you are in the better ship, you can then invest in system upgrades. Don't underestimate ships of this class. A well decked Viper or Cobra with appropriate upgraded gear can be quite a threat to much larger ships. A stock Cobra for example, is very weak compared to an A-class Cobra geared for combat. The difference in replacement insurance can be substantial. Think 10k cred vs 100k creds. My current cobra with a good bit of A level gear is about 75k creds to replace. A few million in gear investments, compared to the initial ~300k cost of the cobra. Build the ship you like most based upon your preferred play style. Then tweak/tune to your heart's content. Have fun!

Hi there!

Have to say I don't agree about the base weapons being poor...last night I made 170k with my original sidey just bounty hunting at a nav point. Don't consider myself a great pilot but found the basic loadout to be surprisingly effective...
