Newcomer / Intro Just starting game.

I am just after a bit of advice as new to the game.

Is it worth starting a character and just flying around practing flying, landing etc with no boundaries and then deleting the character to start properly or is that just a big waste of time?

Is there anything that takes a bit of practice, that I can experiment with and get better?

Not sure what direction want to play the game, I just got a nice shiny joystick thrustmaster so keen to work out all everything with the game.

One last question is it better to practice in solo mode or onine mode? When I am fully experienced I am confident I will be playing on the online side of things but not sure if worth it while just experimenting and practicing things.

Practice docking for sure. I didn't find it very hard but others seem to. This is my first experience of pc gaming so maybe I hadn't learned any bad habits I don't know.

If you have a mic voice attack is worth downloading and frees up loads of buttons.
Maybe do a couple of delivery missions to get a feel for how it all works.

When I've ventured into online ive not seen many real players. May just be blind luck tgough
Good luck out there CMDR

I think you've already figured it out

play the tutorials through until you have them down pat and fine tune your controls (pause ..P >> adjust and test)

watch some youtube stuff and read the guides made by players

I'd go solo for awhile. You may not need to kill yourself off, there's plenty of ways to die already for the inexperienced. My two favorites are:
1) get too close to the sun while fuel scooping and burn up.
2) engage boost (afterburners) while in a spaceport. Result = massive fireball.

Or you could get so many fines you might as well declare bankruptcy i.e. use clear save. Best ways to go bankrupt for me:
1) pick up floating stuff in space (stolen) and get caught by the feds. Instant fine. Avoid feds and take stolen articles to pirate stations.
2) this may not apply anymore but accidentally shooting a fed's ship.. not good.
3) ejecting cargo inside a space station. not a good idea, they don't like litterbugs.
4) not having enough credits to insure your ship.
I'd advise not to take jobs that are considered illegal until you're adept at breaking interdictions.

Do the practice thing and start again is fine. That was my plan but I didn't need to in the end. Only time I deleted my save was when I got stuck with no fuel or money and I didn't know about the self destruct option.

I'd say go through all of the tutorial missions and combat missions until you get a feel for it then...

... Elite has a practice option. It's called giving you a free Sidewinder ship. You start with the humble Sidewinder. It's not big, it's not powerful but it is flexible enough to get you started. You can do almost anything in the Sidewinder be it Trading, Exploration, Bounty Hunting, Pirating, Smuggling etc. However it won't do any of these things well, consider it introductions to each of the various activities.

The beauty of the Sidewinder is that if you crash, get shot or make a mistake, you get another one, free of charge.

Once you feel confident, have amassed enough credits and know a direction you want to go in then it's time to take the plunge and buy an appropriate ship of your own. That's when things get real and you have to keep a reserve of credits for ship insurance because if you make a mistake with your own ship, you lose it if you can't pay the insurance.

Fly safe commander.

Never try out you spankin' ne discovery scanner inside a station. They will lght you up like a Christmas tree for that. If you want a new Sidewinder, that's how you get one really fast.

If you fuel scoop, lt doesn't work on brown dwarfs. Most stars with dwarf in the name can be problamatic in that regard.

Before leaving any dock, check for fines. The sneak up on you. Landing in a station with old fines, as little as 200cr will cause an untimely death.

Have fun. It's all about the fun.

Having experience in other similar games is a plus because it helped me to understand what to do in this one a bunch. I did tutorials and read some tutorial type stuff(absolutely no walkthroughs). I did watch some video like how to save time coming into a system to port and basic mechanics of flight but nothing that would take away from learning actual game play. How much you watch all depends on how much you want to learn on your own and to me the learning on my own was a huge part of the fun.

I started in open play and haven't looked back, doing a little bit of everything but I've made most funds by trading. I did get a good starting chunk of credits from doing the smuggling missions but that will only make you so much until you need to find something else but is good for starting out. I don't grind any because I don't want to lose any interest in this game so I tend to flip from trading, exploring and bounty hunting. I have been playing just under a month and still enjoy myself and how I play.

Make sure you play how you want and have enough credits to cover your first bought ship for when it blows up as more than likely it will happen. Good luck CMDR!

The only reason i could see the need to "self destruct" starting out would be excessive fines/bounty. I recall being confused and racking up 17k in fines from one faction (at the time it seemed like all the $$ in the universe) but ED can be delightfully unforgiving and I died soon after without having to
"Selfie" :)
