Just upgraded from 680 to 970... zero improvement.

Well... just like the title says really! I might wipe my PC and start over as this seems a bit off.

GTX 680 benchmarked at 80fps max
GTX 970 benchmarked at 120+ fps

Both judder at a little under 75fps in ED with all settings at Low. Absolutely no improvement from the new card.

What gives?

Looking at the GPUBoss comparison, it doesn't look like the 970 is that much better in all respects.

In 3DMark06 the 680 beats the 970 hands down. I have no idea if that is revelant to ED however.

I don't know the Nvidia numbering system intimately, but it seems you went up from a 6XX card to a 9XX card, and also down from a X80 card to a X70 card. Maybe that means something performance-wise?

Thing is I see plenty of people describing gameplay with a 970 as "silky smooth", find it hard to believe a 970 wont run elite on DK2 even on lowest settings.

I have 6 cores at 3.8 and 8gb of ram which should be plenty. Zero change from the upgrade just seems a bit fishy when all my benchmarking software is giving a 50% framerate increase.

I don't use VR myself (yet), but I've heard you need a 980 or better for DK2, at least with Horizons.

I have a 970 with a WQHD display (2560 x 1440) and it gives me 60+ FPS in all situations in season 1. In the Horizons beta however, I cannot use full settings on planet surfaces without the FPS suffering badly.

I'm thinking about upgrading already. Half a year I've had this card. :S

No 980 is the minimum spec for the CV1, not the DK2. Dk2 runs at 75fs / 1920 1080 CV1 runs at 90fps 2160 1200

Going to perform a full wipe an reinstall windows to see if I can get it sorted.

I have been using the 970 with DK2 for months. Runs great with most settings maxed out. Silky smooth indeed.

You could be experiencing a bottleneck, you may want to run some tests to see if its your cpu is holding you back, a good rule of thumb is keeping an eye on cpu/gpu usage, if your gpu usage is low but cpu usage is high then cpu is causing the slowdown, if cpu usage is low and gpu usage is high, things are most likely alright.

I think I've sorted it (although still not perfect).

Vsync had turned on when I updated my drivers and seemed to be causing the judder. Much, much better now. Can only get terrain up to High (and have to push on to graphics card with slider). I will still do a full system wipe though and start with a fresh windows install as this install is about 6 month old and clogged up with junk, in the past I've found ED works better on a fresh computer.

For now though I'm going to enjoy this silky supercruise while giggling at my ultra cockpit shadows ;)

GTX 770, DK2 flawless gameplay (other than some positional tracker issues every now and then). Horizons, though, I have to turn down textures on planets as it causes some FPS drops. As does SC in Horizons, for some reason. However, regular ED I get flawless FPS and gameplay. I don't know my FPS, but it's pretty damn smooth.

See a few posts above, it's fixed. 970 is a huge performance boost over my old 680.

Mods, feel free to close!
