Newcomer / Intro Just watched the Odyssey trailer...

As stated, I just got an email from FD with the trailer for the new Odyssey update coming in "Early 2021"...The footage was nice, but when you are the ones running the show, you can find a beautiful little moon to use in the demo. Here is the link that I got...

Odyssey Demo from Frontier Dev

My Thoughts:
While the graphics really look good, it just seems like, unless you are in Open, you are walking around on a moon, or a station, or some other place. There is some First Person Shooter action in the trailer, but it doesn't show if it is Bots you are fighting, or other Commanders or both. Again, there isn't much in the way of information in the trailer, but as I said, the graphics look good.

While walking around on a planetoid or station may be fun, I have other games that I can do that on (SW:TOR, NMS, etc). I'll have to think about the pros and cons and whether the additional expense will warrant a purchase, or pre-purchase. The regular Pre-Purchase Elite Dangerous: Odyssey version is $39.99 USD and the Pre-Purchase Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Deluxe Alpha Expansion is $54.99 USD which includes the Official Soundtrack, and alpha/beta access. These prices are from the Steam site...so they may be equal, more, or less elsewhere.

For those who have seen this already, disregard...and if this shouldn't be here, Forgive me.

Just trying to pass on some info in a spot where there are quite a few New, and Old, Commanders.

I think what many of us want and why Star Citizen has proved so popular as an idea is that idea of being able to walk around, get in a vehicle, drive to your ship, board your vessel and fly off into space, ie: a complete experience, has been a dream of many of us since the 80s. Other games have given this experience somewhat, but there's yet to be a full game that has all this functionality in a multiplayer enviroment, especially with this full micro to macro scale, some games offer something like this in a single player world (like NMS or the X series) but MANY of us have been looking forward to this, specifically in an open multiplayer experience and even more particularly in the Elite universe. This has been something I've wanted since the 80s, back when I imagined other ships were players and how I'd love to walk around the space stations when I docked. It might not be for everyone, but a LOT of us have DREAMED of this for literally decades. Your ideas are yours, but personally, I REALLY hope this gives me the complete experience I've wanted since I was a kid. In the Elite universe.

Oh, I'm not saying that it isn't something that MANY have waited for, I know that there have been quite a few who in the forums have hoped for this to become a reality. More than likely, I will buy the expansion...Simply for the ability to hop out of the SRV and leave my footprints in the dirt. I agree that this does give you the micro-macro experience that NMS and SW:TOR doesn't have. At least it doesn't cost 5 billion credits and has a weekly upkeep fee...I Hope.

Indeed, many of us have had these thoughts in the 80s / 90s. :)

And that's exactly where Frontier are going wrong.
Elite was supposed to be a different kind of game - now they're running after everybody else in an attempt to be 'popular'.
Trying to be a third rate version of what somebody else does better is sheer stupidity.

It all looks nice and fancy. Walking around, doing all the non-spaceshippy stuff,... All the novelty and added freedoms.
What I'm afraid of, though, is that all these things will be fun just once or twice and then we're back in our cocpits, wishing Fdev spent all this dev time on things that actually matter for a spaceship pilot.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited for anything new in Elite, but these new gameplay loops will have to be a HELLA fun to convince me it was worth the effort.

I've snagged a preorder. However, I am concerned my PC may struggle but, in a way, I'm future proofing my game in the hope of a new PC next year. I'm not holding my breath thoguh.

My PC survived Cyberpunk. We are not afraid of anything, now.

In all seriousness, though, yeah, on one hand Odyssey looks like a power hog, but Fdev always delivered when comes to optimization. I'm sure it will be runnable.

Elite feet was planned from the beginning with Elite Dangerous, and the game is not changing into star citizen just because it will have the ability to walk around
Would you call Doom and Half life the same game, just because they are FPSers. Elite has its own identity and that isn't going to change.

Also I don't see them being a third rate version of somebody else. What they are doing is very different to star citizen and NMS. In my view it looks far better.
