I don't generally watch too many movies and as far as animated films go, mostly just Ghibli and Disneys, but I'll add it onto the list.
You're living in post-apocalyptic times. It's good 'innit? We recently passed Back to the Future 2, now we're getting close to both Akira and Bladerunner (2019).
Pretty soon we'll be arriving at Metropolis also! (2026)
Really? You're missing out on some really amazing stuff. Just don't go into Akira expecting a feel good Disney experience. And watch it before Hollywood decide to destroy it as they destroyed Ghost in the Shell with that recent Scarlett Johansson abomination knock off disaster.

From Chibli, think Mononoke Hime, or maybe even Grave of the Fireflies. It's a fairly grim (but cool) SciFi piece.
Another somewhat similar but more recent piece I can recommend is Paprika.
