So, to cut a long story short(ish), I spent three nights last week RPing as an unPirate. Basically, I went to a starter system in my Python, swapped most of my SCBs out for cargo racks, loaded up with Palladium (and some biowaste), and went unPirating.

Once out-and-about, it was unPirate time. Pick target (Harmless small ships, no Wanteds, no PP factions, no wings), interdict, then politely request they cut engines and await further instructions. Those who complied, got rewarded with 10 tonnes of Palladium (and in one instance, a cargo scoop tutorial). Those who ran, they received a tonne of biowaste dropped at high boost speed over their ship. Those who shot, I offered them 10 minutes to destroy my ship.

Many tonnes of Palladium donated to the starter community, but two incidents that resulted in the destruction of the other players ships, which make me feel a bit bad (though at no point did I even deploy weapons or make contact with either ship), hence a call-out to the Karma Police.

First incident, my "customer" engaged their FSD as soon as it had cooled (no submit, so full cool-down), then tried boosting away whilst I followed, offering the chance to come to a halt and receive a free gift of some pure, cold, Palladium. The only reply I received was "Sorry, a bit busy at the moment, my ship appears to be overheating", shortly followed by the spontaneous combustion of said ship.

This made me sad.

The second incident involved a rather trigger-happy Sidewinder pilot, who responded to my offer of free goodies with a burst of pulse laser fire, earning himself a bounty in the process (oops). Once he realised that he was not in a position to actually harm me, I started the process of dropping some Palladium, only to see three new contacts drop into the instance, consisting of three NPC local rozzers. Not a problem for me, but definitely a problem for my "customer", as he was now wanted. So I moved off to engage the three cops, destroying two, whilst the third slipped past me and started to engage my new friend. Managed to get back in time to save him, but the parting coppers final words were along the lines of "Reinforcements Incoming!" just before his ship blew. Not so good, as this consisted of an Anaconda and his mates. I quickly messaged my trigger-happy partner-in-crime "Time to get out of here", and with him targeted to monitor his hull status, started to boost away and engage FSD.

The last thing I heard, just before my FSD countdown started, were those fateful words, "Target Destroyed".

This also made me sad.

So, my Karma is in turmoil. I have gifted millions of free Palladium to a lot of new Cmdrs, hopefully showing them that not all encounters with other pilots will end in them loosing their ships, and also giving them a little leg-up to upgrade their stater ships. On the flip-side, I am responsible for the destruction of two "Harmless" rated Sidewinders, which would not have happened had I not interdicted them.

I put it to the forums, am I a Bad Monkey, or a Nice Primate?

Mods, can this be a Poll please? "Bad Monkey" or "Nice Primate" please. :D

It's a Dangerous galaxy out there. You can't blame your "customers" for getting spooked with that hard sell.
How about instead of "Please cut your engines and await instructions" you tried saying something like "Hi! Call me Santa Claus! Want some free palladium? It's FREE!"
Or you could hail them in SC instead of interdicting them.
I applaud your public-spirited generosity, but your social skills could use a little refining. ;)

Philanthropy is and should be it's own reward.....carry on.

You are doing good things though in a slightly scary way, I'd run if you interdicted me regardless of how polite you are.

Francis of Assisi took a vow to never hurt animals no matter how small or insignificant - on one of his walks he came across a snake on the path, he stepped over the snake and went on his way. The next person coming up the same path was bitten by the snake and died, is that Francis's fault?

The moral of the story is bad things happen to good people and you can't see every eventuality - your good deeds outweigh your folly.

I did wonder where all those sidewinders I destroyed today got their Palladium from and why they didn't spend the money on better ships.

;)

My intention with my opening message was to maintain some ambiguity, as opposed to simply handing out a definitive statement of intent. In this way, intelligent responses gain a reward, fighting or running, no reward (except the biowaste that is).

If they still had it today them there is no hope for them, as I last did this on Saturday night. :p

Seriously though, I do hope that they managed to sell it on and invest in their ships a bit. 130,000cr is quite a lump sum if you're still knocking around in a sidey. Saying that, I still use one for buzzing around station interiors for a laugh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2CkBv2gdo_M&feature=youtu.be)

I was joking :) Nice to see something positive in Open, I'd long since lost hope for it.

Spotted the smiley, responded in kind.

Open is what Open is, good, bad, ugly, just like life itself. I just tried to add something a bit left-field to the mix.

Sure thing. :)

Cheers Jenner. Cmdrs, cast your votes please (there might be some free palladium in it for you).

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
Voted Nice Primate. Gotta hand it to you....very creative! :) I love it.

Interdiction is a hostile act. Next time, you could consider politely asking people whether they'd like some free money, instead of punching them in the face while screaming "DO YOU WANT MY CASH?!"

I think your heart was in the right place.....don't lose any sleep over it.....probably should have sent a friends request to the destroyed side's and if they accepted then message them and ask to wing up so you could drop some palladium to give 'em a leg up. :)

Yes and no. Interdiction, whilst inherently hostile, does not harm either ship if the interdictee submits (which is the smart thing to do, as it opens up your options quicker once dropped into Newtonian space). My opening message was simply to cut engines and await further instructions, and I also used the word "please" as I am polite. No screaming, no punching. Certainly no over usage of capital letters.

My intent was part philanthropy (have some free stuff), and part social experiment (to see how new players react in a potentially hostile situation, without the actual hostility).

Fly safe Cmdr.
