Keep It Classy Folks

I know there's a lot of contentious issues being discussed here daily. I myself have expressed strong opinions on more than a few topics. However, there seems to be a trend lately where vitriol is replacing common sense. It isn't just on the FDev forums either. The death threats over the NMS delay is a good example of how polarized things can get. The "I'm right, you're wrong and there's nothing you can say to change my mind" attitude is becoming much more prevalent.

If I have an issue with something here, I try to state my opinion without insult or malice. I attack an opinion, not the person making it. This is a discussion forum and to "discuss" you need opposing views. Shouting does not reinforce your argument. Insults just make you look like a child and undermine the very points you are making.

Given the average age of the players here is quite high, you would think the maturity level would reflect that. You can make an effective argument without trashing those who disagree with you.

Anyway, that's all. We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming.

Hello Shadragon,

Why would you possibly think a higher average age would make discussion more mature?

Does not fit in with my observations of the world, I mean I am right and everyone else is wrong :)

Seriously, we have a very splintered community here, and the draw bridges are going up, as versions come out - people are worried that their vision of the game will not be fulfilled, and sacrificed for "section of the community B" to get their way. It really does not help that the same arguments between the splinters are rehashed with different thread titles.

For example (ts an example of crap behavior by me, not an invite to debate!), I an very much "drawbridge up", emotional response only about Guilds having control of BGS resources. Initially I was just "anti-guild". Some reasoned debate with some pro-guild players in the open verses solo thread version X (X escapes me) allowed me to at least refine the bit of guilds that do not fit into my vision of the game. Its very hard for me to have a reasoned debate about it these days - unhelpful witty lines (well I think they are funny) and sarcasm is the best I can give as my frontal lobe long ago gave way to my emotional brain for a response.

I think a lot of us have got to that point on quite a few areas.

Simon

Rep given ...

But ultimately futile ... Welcome to the interweb.

Mr Dragon,

I'll have you know that I am very offended by your comment upon my maturity level.

As a 40 year old professional, I work very hard to maintain a very low level of maturity whenever possible. There are many times I have hit the 'reply' button with the intent of helping someone only to remind myself that it is my duty to be snarky and condescending.

Next time please be aware that anyone can be mature. It takes greater effort to maintain the level of attery that is so common in these threads.

Good day to you sir.

I made the following post a while back but the sentiment is still there.

Hi Everyone.

Just thought I'd make a quick post on how the forum is evolving as new backers of Elite Dangerous join us here for the release.

Please be patient to new forum members as they join and delve into the forum and the wonderful world of Elite, we all make mistakes and no-one like to be jumped on when this happens. The vast majority of the forum members are fantastic in helping new posters to join in and offer advice. There are couple of points I'd like to make:

  • If a new thread is created on a existing subject/in the wrong area etc. Take a little bit of time to direct them to the existing thread and by all means PM a mod and we will look into the thread, please dont make disparaging comments .

  • If someone creates a post that comes across in a negative manner. Don't respond in kind, instead show them there are better ways to make a point by responding in a positive and constructive manner. sarcastic replies discourages new forum members and will stifle debate and can easily descend into flamewars.

  • If a forum member is unsure of the forum rules or how to post on the forum etc. We have guides you can direct them to that can help them so they can join in and enjoy being part of the great community we are all helping to create.

The Frontier forum is a family orientated place, it may come as a shock to some but Elite is not the only series of games FD have created. ;) Some games are for the younger gamers i.e Kinectimal, who may be intrigued into what Elite is and will browse the main Elite Dangerous forum. We really want to encourage them to join in and become the next generation of Elite players to kick our collective bottoms with their faster reflexes and all that.

Always be mindful of this and post in a responsible manner.

We are all fans of the game and are all on a exciting journey together to help Frontier make the game the very best it can be. The forum is a place to express ideas and opinions have fun and revel in the madness creating a great game. Everyone has a right to be heard and as long as they contribute in the right way they should be allowed to have their voice heard.

Remember many of you were new forum members not so very long ago and the influx of new posters will continue for a while yet as the game progresses through the stages of testing until release and beyond... It can take a bit of time to get used to how Frontier likes the interaction of the forum to be conducted, so show them how to join in by leading by example.

Thanks everyone. :D

Its Ok, everyone on this version of the forum is actually shadow banned from the real forum, without realising it, for repetitive moaning. The real forum is fully of nice people who don't whine.

Oh, wait a mo, I'm also on here - Oi!

And the streets are paved with cheese.

I've always found that if wouldn't like something being said to me, that I probably should not say it as well. Except for fans of Barcelona, Betis, or the Yankees or NY Jets.

If only you knew......... ;)

I could have had class, I could have been a contender. I could have been somebody. Instead of a bum, which is what I am.

problem is, everyone is a critic. When you backed the kickstarter, it wasn't like "tier 1: copy of Elite Dangerous, and the right to vote and veto every tiny bit of gameplay Frontier might introduct into the game in the future". Sure, report bugs, that helps the devs out, but writing a game by commitee won't work.

How about: we let Frontier write their game their way, and download it when its ready and play and be happy? Is that so hard?
