Keep your hubris in check

I just got to eat crow. I've been trying to poke around wreckages and debris fields, scooping the scoopable black boxes and scanning the non-scoopable black boxes, and I was getting tired of being chased out of these zero-gravity dumpsters by Thargoids with their dumb deactivator waves. So I went and bought a shutdown field neutralizer for the first time ever then went back to scoop up some space trash.

I dropped into a debris field, shot a limpet to grab a scoopable black box as a Thargoid made his entrance. He fired his Big Off Switch but I managed to counter it first try. I felt pretty smug about that, so I thought to myself, "Heh heh, now I'll just scan this other black box for that paragraph or two of sweet juicy lore while Mr. Tharg throws a hissy fit"

Well, Mr. Tharg's little temper tantrum sent me to rebuy screen within seconds.. Lol

2nd rebuy in 6 years 😅

Stay frosty out there, folks. 😁

Yea, bring an armored ship.
Stuff your ship with hull reinforcement.
People say don't bother with shields, but do. You probably have them anyway. It doesn't stop damage, just lessens it a bit.
Bring a decon controller. Scouts love to lob acid missiles.
Leave when they arrive. High jump, its glitchy right now if you select a destination from the map. Bug? Intended effect? Select a destination from the nav panel and that has worked every time.
Don't panic.

The big tip here is leave when they arrive.. Lol

I never use "explorer builds" all of my ships actually use military composites, hull reinforcements, and MRP. It's not stuffed to the gills with hull reinforcements like an actual full combat build would be, but I always felt like it was pretty good.

Because of that I got cocky and thought, "It's fine, my ship can take a little bit of abuse while I ease up on this black box to scan it..."

🚀💥🔫👽

I don't know what variant of Thargoid it was. I'm guessing from the amount of damage it did it was one of the "hard ones" because prior run-ins with Thargoids didn't result in my ship turning to goo faster than I could say "holy 💩!" (and these encounters are probably what led me to believe I could just browse the candy aisle while any old Thargoid was hanging around).

Quick and dirty way to see how nasty an interceptor is without scanning or getting a good visual is target the Thargon swarm. Cyclops have 32 Thargons, Basilisks 64, Medusa 96, Hydra 128.

I've been bringing my thargoid combat ship as it has all the bells and whistles for surviving the beating. Doesn't have all the scanners though. I did pop in with my explorer with all the scanners. I'm experienced with the thargoids so am able to get away, but that ship has no guns, and now my thargoid combat ship has just a functioning beam weapon in "the zone".

Yea, the aliens seem to be behaving differently. I say seems because we are in a strange situation. Are they souped up or are we just imagining that?

Most of the time I've been coming across basilisks and medusas, but textures appear a bit different. They look grey to me. Cyclops were green, basilisk red, medusa has the spikes and hydra is just totally different.

Also, their swarms are active again, but yea, usually, especially if its a cyclops, the damage is minimal. Even when running away, I can get about 2.5 to 3km away then they speed up to close the distance. That's basilisk behavior but not everyone is a basilisk surely.
