Hardware & Technical Keeping GPU Cool Over Summer

It's summer, which means higher temps all around the northern hemisphere. My GPU is running hotter than ever and is having some slight thermal issues. Short of slapping a waterblock on it or ramping my fan curves up even more, what free or low cost methods are there to improve temps? (Card is an Evga 1080 FTW)

Remove dust from the case vents, fans, heatsinks etc. Vacuum or air blow it out - careful though as the fan blown in reverse can send a current back along the wire. Just gently hold the fan still with you fingers.
Check cables are clear and not blocking airflow
Have more space around the case
stop the cat sleeping against it
put one of those iceblocks for a cool box in front of the air intake (mind the condensation if you do this, free water is bad inside a computer)

If it's an old case it is possible taking a side off will help, but be careful some work better with the side on as they can channel cool air to the right places

I have a GTX 1060 and noticed it struggling a bit during the hot afternoons. Took the side panel off the tower and pointed a cheap fan at it. Problem solved. :)

(my cat wants to sleep on my keyboard...)

My solution is simple.

Turn fans up.
Put headphones on.

Lol
As soon as the ambient temperature in my house reaches 18~°, my GPU fan basically never shuts up. So I just wear headphones.
It's an old GPU though, and struggles with everything these days.

My cat likes to sit on top of my PC, after a good gaming session, when the top mounted fans have slowed down, but are still kicking out a lot of heat. :D
I can shift her by turning the fan speed up again. Lol

Likewise this. I have a relatively quiet PC but due to overclocking and living in [the heat of] Australia, if I'm going to play something that hits CPU/GPU hard then I'll turn the fans up and put the ear-cans on. Obviously I play in VR, too, so headphones are better to immerse you in the game.

Easier to follow footsteps in PUBG, too, with the ear-cans on

I just don't turn the PC on until it's cooler, lol.

But that's more due to the fact I can't bear to sit at my computer whilst my room is hitting 35 degrees Celsius.

That may be the issue. My rig is in the corner and that may be impacting temps. Will try it out! Already dusted, which was my original solution, until it did nothing, and I already got my cat away. Kept pushing the power button while I was doing work lol.
Will update if moving it, likely onto my desk helps at all. Thanks!
EDIT: Would putting my PSU fan up to temporarily create a negative pressure zone in my PC to bring in more air perhaps help? I have the tools to clean dust out (air can and paintbrush) so, would it potentially help temps?

Good luck.

I'd expect a bigger response from a good dust than moving it, but it won't hurt (desk real estate aside).

Make sure you have proper case ventilation, what do you have? then the heat should not be a problem, its fine you have a card with a custom cooler and whatnot, but if you do not have proper case cooling, the hot air dumped into the case is going to heat up everything, the 'stock' cooler is better in that case, a blower setup that pushes the air out of your case.
That said what is the 'higher' temperature you are saying? most of the cards are just fine at 80-85ish and only really need to be looked at when above that.

Reduce the graphics quality. Temps will go down accordingly.
That is not a solution to the actual problem.

I have a Phanteks Enthoo Evolv case with stock fans, 1 140 in the rear, 2 in the front. I also have a 120 up top for my CPU AIO. The temps are running around 83-87 depending on ambient temps and it sometimes is crashing from thermals. I have just ramped up my fans again and it is doing better, but could be helped.

yup, this summer i have just left my case fans on full speed all the time, not being bothered by the noise because i also have a room fan permanently pointed at me from 4 feet away :)

I'm very curious to what the general opinion here is, regarding how hot you'd allow your GPU / CPU temps to go.

I live in Singapore. The normal daytime temp is 30C. Night time temp is around 26C to 28C.

My PC runs at 40C for CPU and 50C for GPU at idle. When running games like ED, CPU kicks up to around 65C, and GPU about 70C.

Would my temps be alarming to you guys? It's "normal" to me. It's like this the whole year, every year.

Those GPU temps are okay. Actually, the under load one's better than I get here in far colder climate, and I don't worry about them at all (of course, I do monitor them).
But the CPU under load seems a bit on the high side, I wouldn't be happy until I got that down by 10-15C.

I understand moving to Nunavut can solve address GPU temp issues...

Yeah I figured as much. CPU at 60-ish is normal here (at least for me). GPU does waver around 70 to 75. Highest I've ever seen was 80C for GPU. I don't even use any 3rd party cooling solutions... just standard stock heatsinks + fan.

If I have my airconditioning on, idle temps are 35C to 38C for CPU, and GPU around 45 to 50C. Under load, CPU is around 60C still, and GPU maybe 65 to 70. Airconditioning temperature setting is for 25C.

I'm just ever-so-slightly amused that you guys would be concerned about running the PC during summer... cuz it's "summer" here every day, all year, every year and my PC doesn't die from overheating :D
