I was reading an article about a gas giant discovered very close to its sun and being torn apart. They say its 1,300ly from earth, but I couldn't find it on the Star Map, does anyone know if it's in the game?

The system is called Kelt-16 and they say the planet is a 'Hot Jupiter', called 'KELT-16b', which is pretty boring compared with "Hot Jupiter" I reckon.

Hot Jupiter isn't the name of a planet. That's how they usually refer to all gas giants in very close proximity to a star.

Unfortunately Jupiter descended rather than ascended.. Although may reach cult movie status. If some one can explain what exactly was supposed to be happening since the cast admitted they had no clue either.

I believe the star is referenced as 2MASS J21252752-8138278 or TYC 2688-1839-1 - see if either of those turn up in the gal map.

KELT designations come from Kilodegree Extremely Little Telescope surveys for exoplanets. Weird name.

EDIT - Doesn't seem to be modelled.

Thanks! I didn't realise that!

Is KELT the complex with many many small telescopes in South Africa? Or is that a new thing being built?

The Southern telescope is here:

And the northern one is here:

As you can see from the pics they really are "Extremely Little Telescopes" and there is only one per site.

Are you thinking of the "Super WASP"? (Wide Angle Search for Planets) That is a UK extrasolar planet hunting system that has two installations, on in South Africa and one on La Palma. Each is made up of a cluster of 8 cameras co-mounted on a robotic mount. The southern one is in the same South African Astronomical Observatory as the southern KELT one.

Thanks for the info, I'll check out those links. I love the way this game makes me want to know more and more about the science behind space. I've been watching the Netflix program "How the Universe Works", which shows a lot of planets and moons and the conditions / makeup they have. I cant get enough!
