Kev B Motion Chair v4 - Pro update. Anyone going to the Elite Community Meet in Reading

Hello Commanders,

Following on from my previous posts about my Elite Dangerous motion chair developments, its been a busy month.
I've made some enhancements to the v4 3DOF chair while I wait for 4 more weeks (of a 10 week lead-time) for my four more 'large' motors to arrive so I can build the v5 6DOF rig.

I'm taking the v4 Motion Chair to the Elite Community meet in Reading in April (a huge thankyou to the organisers), where I will be playing ED in the chair, in VR. I look forward to meeting fellow commanders there and sharing the tech-detail with anyone interested.

I thought I'd post a vid link here to show what the latest incarnation is like and I'm looking forward to showing off its capabilities at the Elitemeet. I'm hoping to show it to the ED team if any are attening the event.

Fly Safe,

You forgot the most important part. The beer that goes in the fridge.

Beverages and Food Choice (Pizza & Curry in my case) is purely optional for each user, but yes the Fridge/Freezer must be topped up, and i suppose ........Hmmmmmm.......this might be a case for retaining the wife!

Yes' Ok, i'll get my coat, looks like i am leaving .... ;)

Whats the service interval on the mechanics :) Seems like there will be quite some work to keep it in good condition with all the moving parts.

I sometimes wish I was a normal sized human so I could even dream of one day getting something like this, but unlike stuff on the top shelf, this, and most cars, will always be out of reach. ;)

Nope - its very reliable on the wear and tear front. I periodically check the security of the actuator arms and motor potentiometer security but they've never come loose in over 300hrs of 'flying' in this v4 design. I've over-engineered everything so there are no weak points in my design. The chair really gets a hammering when I use it (which is daily and can be for 8-10 hrs near-continuous play sometimes). No signs of wear in anything. Its a reliable rig and I'm very happy with it.

Absolutely awesome.

Though I have to admit that stick looks to be about 2" to high for comfort ;)

Hi - thanks for the comment. Yes I know what you mean about the stick, however I find this slightly raised position more comfy and after a long 10hr gaming session - no arm ache.

Yeah was just a thought.
Obviously you would have moved it if you wanted to :)

I'd still want to try my hand at something like this but would have to start from scratch.
Ain't got tools or a shed of junk to start with.

I would also need to over engineer heavily for weight, so would need powerfully motors and power to drive them.
I'm a few hundred pounds to start with and then comes chair and gear.
I would like to include room for racing as well with Pcars2 as well.
From what I have seen it shouldnt be entirely impossible to have a chair that can handle both.

Mate, that is amazing! It is nutters like you doing stuff like that, that have made the UK punch above its weight in the world.

West country represent :D

This guy is a pioneer amongst mortals. I purchased the next level v3 motion seat about 6 months ago and it comes with settings for Dcs, aerofly fs2, x-plane, project cars, assetto corsa and many others. But sadly no settings for elite dangerous. Hopefully after the devs lift their jaws of the floor after seeing this in action they will finally provide telemetry to the motion community. Honestly, motion and vr is a match made in heaven or in this case someones shed 😁

Many thanks for the support Commanders!

the v4 is now finished. Looks real pro - touchscreen control, closed-loop cooling system, comfy, smooth and tidy. Really looking forward to demoing it. I'm sure all who see it will be quite impressed (even if I say so myself - I can't stop looking at it!). I fly it nearly every day. It now has wheels too - so a little more work and I could drive it down the M4 to the event lol.

I also have the v5 6DOF prototype working fully from my laptop now - so I'll also be bringing that to the event to show-off what API data is capable of. I'm certain the dev's will be impressed and see the potential of game data from ED.
I have been playing around with graphics for the chair touchscreen hmi. Managed to correctly code some nice touches..here is the info screen.

It will be a great event with fellow commanders. Looking forward to it,

Well Commanders, I'm back from this great event.

Managed to get quite a few CQC sessions and some BH'ing in with joystick controlling the chair and a rollercoaster sim using API motion data for folks to try out.
Over 20 people tried out the motion chair and there were many smiling faces - even managed to get Ed Lewis and Kate Russell to give it a try - all in VR too. I think they were impressed (see below). Here's hoping that FD can see their way into maybe adding the API for motion into ED having seen what is possible.

Had a really good time. Many thanks to the ECM guys.
