Kev B's 6DOF motion sim v5 (full size) - ready for flight! (OMG)

Hello Commanders,

Following on from my motion chair experiments, I'm very happy with my latest 'development' which will further enhance my VR experience in ED and am pleased to share it here with you.
My v4 motion chair has worked really well since April - however, 3 degrees of freedom (3DOF) can be improved upon. So, after 170hrs of build time between 6th June and 7th July I have a new 'toy', the v5 with full 6DOF motion.

I've flown it for 4 hours so far and its all working well - better than i expected.

I attach a 7 min vid showing the development from scratch to the first ED test flight yesterday - the soundtrack is the hum of the simulator drives (which is how I expect a ship to sound).

Questions or comments as ever are welcome,
fly safe!

Hi - it cost about the same as a good gaming pc, biggest cost is the motors (£200 ea) - everything else is pretty cheap. Just takes time and determination. I'm hoping to inspire others.

i think if you were to post a list of the mats and building process others would definitely be inspired

Still jealous.

And at what £2000?
It's still at least £3000 less than what is available commercially with similar capability.

Also in the "waiting for Pimax 8k" club

That looks like so much fun. I'm sure it will be even better once your Pimax 8K arrives. (I'm also waiting for mine.)

holy carp that is fantastic.

sadly i doubt it would be robust enough for a man of my frame. maybe something like that would be the encouragment to keep off the pies and beers.

Did you ask the Frontiersmen that you met about adding an API?

Sure did. Made a point of asking. Even gave details of the (simple) data and comms protocols needed. Gave over my card with my contact details. Everything is programmed and ready at my end.

Fear not Commander Mike, those 6 drive units are pretty powerful (6x45Nm or 2ookg max loading with settings/measurements I'm using) and everything else is scale-able. My fatty mate will be trying this one out as part of my testing - lol. He's a drag-racer so pretty fearless.

I'm just flabbergasted. Amazing! You really know your stuff. Wiring a plug and swapping out a light fitting is about as technical as I get when it comes to electronics.

Very cool [up]

Next time I see you in CQC I help you test it to the limit ;)

cheers Musky. you were actually helping me test it day before yesterday in CQC. I'm just finishing the (snazzy) touchscreen controls and I'll be flying again shortly..
