Kev B's latest ED Motion Chair 'phenomenomics' - the v5 (prototype)

Hello Commanders,

Further to my previous 'motion chair progress' postings here, I've now been flying in my v4 ED motion chair for the last month and it still blows me away !. I've been in the CG's a lot and am also a hero rank in CQC (the chair really moves about in CQC). I fly in it every day.

At the same time I've been working on a prototype motion chair (v5) that will eventually render the whole v4 design obsolete - for me.
Sixty hours later and I have the prototype built, programmed and running and present it here in a 4 min vid for your interest/entertainment. Comments, as ever, are more than welcome.

v5 has the full 6 DOF capability, roll, pitch, yaw, sway, surge and heave. This prototype is a scaled down size of what the final version will look similar to.
It uses two Arduino 8-bit MCU's and four monster-motor h-bridge drivers for six motors.

I'm pretty impressed with the results and can't wait to scale it up to full size for Elite Dangerous. However, to control 6 DOF with just a joystick is likely to cause major issues - so this design my never progress past this prototype. I can do some amazing things with metal, electrics, electronics and code, but game data is a locked door.

I'm politely asking FD again here for some news/progress on a motion API. You did make contact but the trail seems to have now gone cold :-(
an API is really now the only way my v5 chair (and others like it - 'we' are developing the tech in leaps and bounds) can be able to experience the full joys of 6 degrees of freedom (especially in a VR headset). There is really no feeling like it - as good as the real thing!

Fly safe, I hope you like the vid (I hope FD like the vid too)

man, that is quite something. Would love a go in that when built, ED in VR is amazing, but when you add this, it's a completely different level.

I hope the API happens... it really should.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the kind comments Commanders.

Gotta admit - I'm pretty exited about this design. The only thing I need now is some game data and it will be all-systems-go for the full size build. Really need FD's help with this or I fear all will be lost following this design route (which would be a real shame).

On the plus side - I'm gonna be flying the v4 shortly (in VR), BH'ing in the CG for a few hours (quite a few actually). That'll be fun.

Fly safe

Wow, looks amazing. Glad to see you're keeping up the British tradition of inventors in sheds. Forget the Royal family and the Union Jack, this is the stuff that makes me proud to be British. :D

Bloody Marvelous. Huge cred to you Cmdr, and of course my very generous offer to be your Official independent tester ;) still stands.

Can't wait to see the full version. I have a huge interest in VR chairs at the moment nearly buying one (None in stock till March 18).

Large o7 Cmdr.

Bloomin marvelous
Makes my solar powered electronic chicken door opener look like a paper airplane tech wise !
Please keep us updated - fantastic ingenuity and enthusiasm.

Maybe add a few springs aloft to enable folk of 15+st to enjoy as well as saving those 6 blastard motors grief (-:

Outstanding work, all I make in my garage is beer and a terrible noise!
wish I could do that....

Thanks micmacmoc. I also drink a lot of beer in my garage (as well as making lots of noise!). My v4 chair usually has beer within arms reach. I had to remove the bottle holder as the beer went flying once!

LOL Pixel.

the motors I will be using will each lift around 50kg (after efficiency losses are taken into account) and I'll have 6 of them My v4 chair has 2 of the same motors and they can easily throw a 15 stone person around. I will use some gas struts on the final v5 build for 'smoothing' purposes.

Projects like this start off with building solar powered chicken door openers (and such like)..... If you can do that, you could do this.

I'll keep the VR forum updated on progress. I made a MAJOR breakthrough with code last night for the v5 so I'm now ordering the parts for the full size version. Details to follow ...

Where's the "Add to cart" button? :D

I tip my hat to you sir.

"add to cart" -That would be good wouldn't it.
Early days yet though - who knows what the future holds. Just gotta get a robust motion data input from FD to help the development along.
