Hello Commanders,
Further to my previous 'motion chair progress' postings here, I've now been flying in my v4 ED motion chair for the last month and it still blows me away !. I've been in the CG's a lot and am also a hero rank in CQC (the chair really moves about in CQC). I fly in it every day.
At the same time I've been working on a prototype motion chair (v5) that will eventually render the whole v4 design obsolete - for me.
Sixty hours later and I have the prototype built, programmed and running and present it here in a 4 min vid for your interest/entertainment. Comments, as ever, are more than welcome.
v5 has the full 6 DOF capability, roll, pitch, yaw, sway, surge and heave. This prototype is a scaled down size of what the final version will look similar to.
It uses two Arduino 8-bit MCU's and four monster-motor h-bridge drivers for six motors.
I'm pretty impressed with the results and can't wait to scale it up to full size for Elite Dangerous. However, to control 6 DOF with just a joystick is likely to cause major issues - so this design my never progress past this prototype. I can do some amazing things with metal, electrics, electronics and code, but game data is a locked door.
I'm politely asking FD again here for some news/progress on a motion API. You did make contact but the trail seems to have now gone cold :-(
an API is really now the only way my v5 chair (and others like it - 'we' are developing the tech in leaps and bounds) can be able to experience the full joys of 6 degrees of freedom (especially in a VR headset). There is really no feeling like it - as good as the real thing!
Fly safe, I hope you like the vid (I hope FD like the vid too)
