Keyboard + Mouse help with head look

First, I know it's probably better to buy a joystick to do this but for the moment I don't have one. So, what I'm wondering is what is the best way to use the head look feature with mouse and keyboard? Right now the head look is bound to my mouse wheel so that when I push the mouse wheel in I can move my head. My mouse is also what I use to Yaw and Pitch. My problem is that when I click the mouse wheel to move my head and look for a ship or other item, I can't move my ship to follow another ship that is above me, for example.

So what other way could I move my head without using the mouse? Do the arrow keys work? Or do I need to cave in and get a joystick? Any help is appreciated!

Well i use mouse for finer movements and do the major movements with w/s/a/d.

My crazy keyboard flying (Arma jets :) ) is not everyones cup of tea though. It took me many hundreds hours of practice to perfect and now i prefer M + KB to joystick.

Before getting my TrackIr I used VoiceAttack... I had programmed "Look Up", "Look Left", etc... "Look far Right" and so and so...

Then programmed my mouse macros to hold the appropriate keys for the matching milliseconds... so VoiceAttack would trigger those different variants of head movements... worked great actually.

This is my first Elite game, so I'm not sure what you mean exactly. Could you explain it to me as if I were a child?

OK ^^

Well you say that you use your mouse for steering yes? so when you enable headlook you cannot steer your ship while looking around.

I do not have this problem because, i steer my ship with W (pitch up) S (pitch down) A (roll left) D (roll right) Q (yaw left) E (yaw right)

I do also use the mouse for the same thing if i need precision (shooting and stuff)

Just as a proposed solution to steering while using headlook.

You can use the mouse AND keys to do the same type of steering? What I mean is, you can use W to pitch up and also use the mouse to pitch up?

Guys guys . guys/// seriously.... VoiceAttack for headlook.. it works great...

Since im not knight-rider i prefer flying without constantly chatting with my ship :p

Also never felt the need for additional controls, i got everything on my keyboard.

You can indeed. You configure ur mouse under "mouse controls" and can bind buttons under "flight rotation"

I bet in the time it takes you to say "look far right" I can have moved my head right, left, up, and down. :)

Seriously, $20 for an ed tracker is the best deal going.

No argument on my part... there's nothing like headtracking... but if I had to choose between holding down my wheel to look and fight at the same time... I'd turn into David Hasselhoff.

(EDIT)
no...

wait..

No manner of gaming impediment would make me want to ACTUALLY be David Hasselhoff....

Y'know... I'd have never considered star signs when being offered Pammy... though in my head she's still the same age as she was when Elite 1 came out. :-D

She's still just as gorgeous.. But after a lazy, apathic Libra wife, a fidgety, under-emotional Virgo wife, and a lying, scheming, secretive, cheating, no good Pisces wife... I'm taking more precautions and paying attention... :)

JK.. all my wives have been very good women... regardless of when they were born.

Now, back to the headlook? :D sorry OP

You've got no complaints from me. :D

Lol.. there is a BUNCH of stuff I'd love to add to this but the topic's been derailed enough already, and both the swear filter and the moderators have their tolerances set to "kindergarten" level so I'll refrain.. I've had enough warnings as it is thankyou :D

Seriously, have a look at the Ed Tracker OP... it's designed by ED players as a DIY kit which is REALLY easy to build and program (like I did it in under an hour), but they'll do it for you if you're not confident for I think about 25 UK pounds. Most people mount it on their headphones but I prefer to use speakers so I've got it mounted in a little box attached to a girl's hairband. I feel a bit "pretty" when I put it on but I soon forget about that and it's SO intuitive to use. If you want to look right, you just look right a little bit and whatever's over there comes to you. :)
