Keyboard shortcuts or Macro's

Back in the good ole days of Everquest (one I'll have you know) I utilised a great number of keyboard shortcuts and macros to undertake certain tasks. Whether they be following another character, targetting the same enemy or running in circles.

Now that i'm in a place where i can actually play Elite (having banged thousands of ships against the premium beta) I've started to think a few core macros could be useful and have started to try and map my keyboard.
However there seems to be a challenge in the lack of shortcuts available.
Take for example I'd like a "docking macro" to reduce power, drop the gear, turn the lights on and request clearance.

It is the last item that causes me to scratch my head. There is no way to guarantee to open the comms menu on the left panel. Everything after this would be easy (pretty much Select>Select).

Has anyone been able to overcome this or is there a list somewhere of shortcuts?
I've read through the forums and couldnt find a releated thread or solution.

This is related to the heated "we want more keyboard shortcuts" discussions that went on during Alpha. The devs are resisting this push firmly. Their stance is they want to effectively force players to "look around" their cockpits to do stuff, not push shortcut buttons. Personally I don't agree with their UI design on this but it's been stated by the devs that they're sticking to it (i.e. having many essential functions away in sub menus you need to "look" at to activate, with no direct keyboard shortcuts).

I don't mind the current situation to be honest. Takes me about half a second with my left hand over the keyboard to request docking via the HUD.

You also get a quick glance at ships in the local area whilst doing this.

I too like it as it is, it is supposed to be a simluation so to add depth you actually have to do stuff, I don't see what the problem is. I would however like a keyboard shortcut so I can yell at the poor traders I'm pirating, as often there's no time to type anything. That would make sense. Making things "easy" is not the way to go IMO.

Have you thought about Voice Attack + Voice Pack?

Edit: Or maybe getting some keyboard that has macro keys and support macro recording?

You can't guarantee opening the Contacts screen in any particular sub-menu, but I find that it is very rare for me to leave it in anything other than Navigation. Therefore my Docking Request shortcut is "1ee<space>s<space>1"

Voice Attack does everything you are asking. All of my non-critical commands and macros are triggered with voice attack. It's pretty amazing.

I use AutoHotkey with a shortcut which starts and finishes on the nav panel, e.g. CTRL-D

SetKeyDelay, 30, 30
^d::
Send 1ee{Space}s{Space}qq1

My logitech G19 has been good for many games,
I only use one for Elite, a quick coms macro that ask for permition to land.
