Keyboard Users - what binding changes do you use?

I'm a HOTAS user away from home for Xmas so will be using Keyboard + Mouse

What control tweaks should I make to get the most out of using Keyboard + Mouse ?

Thanks!

you need to be able to fly with keyboard(set every direction the mouse is able to execute) only so you can use your mouse for headlook, special buttons are perfect for headlook! Thats essential for me, rest is convenience

Removed 1,2,3,4,TAB,F10 (screen capture),Z (have no idea why) as they all conflict the game either by accidental presses or incase of the TAB I catch the CAPS so I made SPACE boost. Power distribution is via VoiceAttack so left as arrows. Set speeds at all quarters using only \XCV as I can add some with LeftALT+\XCV. I get all 4 forward quarter speeds plus 3 of the Reverse ones as 75%Reverse is actually the same as 100%. Presets are very useful.
Moved Heatsink to F9, Freetracknoir F11, VoiceAttack F12, reset centre screen for Facetracknoir BACKSPACE. F1,F2,F3,F4 is panels. F1 is the web help when setting up VoiceAttack but it doesn't access it when in game.

I've only to decide on the point of H,J,K for hyperspace and Supercruise. It seems to only have a point if you want a specific key for say VoiceAttack to say Disengage rather than Hyperspace (which I disable as its already in game). So it seems H so far for all.
Thrusters are Q=left, E=right, R=up, F=down, A&D set to yaw.
Mouse left&right=roll, up&down=continuous so Flight Assist (LeftCNTRL) is no good unless I add a time for its return. But I get tight turns with Thrust up key & mouse up to get a birdseye kill.
Others are about the same as default as I use VoiceAttack for all ship coms. Especially good for request docking bindings and face-tracking on/off/reset when docked.
All I need now is a key assignment allowed for ECM plus allow more than 2 buttons in the firegroup!

Pretty much everything on the num pad. Makes it easy to quickly glance if I need to but once memorised its fast without having to move your arm to get across the keyboard.

Not many changes, w/s for vertical thrust, a/d for horizontal, scroll wheel for throttle with 10% increments, use multiple buttons on mouse for landing gear, cargo scoop, targeting, retract weapons.
I also use "l/shift roll + into yaw" so I can use my mouse for roll and yaw.

That's pretty much it and it has served !me well.....until my hotas arrives :D

Swap A&D and mouse X axis so roll is on A&D and Yaw on mouse.
Turn off the auto centering for mouse.

Use voice attack :p

Yeah I'm the same. I'm used to flying Arma 3 Heli's with the keyboard so I moved all movement to the keyboard and use mouse for headlook only such as yourself.

I also personally have a Hotas Cougar but it is in need of repair so until the new parts arrive I'm a keyboard/mouse guy.

I did not change much just a few addition. I like it the way it is.
I put:

  • ^ key 100% throttle (the one before 1)
  • x for throttle 0%
  • # for 75% throttle (throttle settings below comes from freespace 2)
  • [ for 25% throttle
  • ] for 50% throttle
  • F1 for 50% throttle (i use this a lot too in combat)
  • z for FA toggle (actually y in german keyboard)
  • | for Rotational correction toggle
  • C for Super Cruise
  • J for Hyperspace/SC combo
  • v for heat sink
  • m mute microphone
  • Jettison all cargo = none :p
  • F2 Chaff launcher
  • F5 shield cell (haven't used it so don't know how good this is)

That's about it.

Function keys for the throttle, number pad for distribution, cursors for lateral and vertical thrusters, +- for forward and reverse thrusters, and l for lights.

Played with both K+M, HOTAS, and have found K+Joystick to be the best fit so far, though considering giving 2nd joystick on left hand a try, and possibly SpaceMouse on left hand... budget permitting. But anyhow, keyboard bindings which make sense for me:

Movement:
ESDF for thrusting forward/back/left/right, in place of the standard WASD. It's something I've used for years with FPS's since it gives an column of keys to bind to for my pinky to hit, the bump on the F key makes finding the correct spot more quickly if my hand gets misplaced, and it's the regular typing position so I don't have to reposition when typing.

V for thrust up, Space bar for thrust down.

W/R for yaw left/right. (Pitch and roll are on the mouse/joystick. Change around if you prefer differently)

1st column:
A/Z for throttle up/down. Shift-A for max throttle, Shift-Z for zero throttle.
Q for boost.

5th column:
T/Shift-T for next/previous target.
G/Shift-G for next/previous hostile target.
B/Shift-B for next/previous subsystem target.

Misc:
X for target straight ahead.
Shift-C/Alt-C (added shift/alt-modifier for safety so I don't hit it accidentally) for dropping chaff/heat sinks.

1234 still used for the nav/comm/sensor/system panels; have ESDF bound to up/down/left/right in the UI and galaxy map as well.

Basically lets me keep my left hand with my index finger on the F, and most everything within a short distance. I do have extra buttons on the joystick for some of the other functions though, namely energy distribution, frameshift, and landing gear (which on my keyboard are still bound to the inverted T arrow keys, J, and L respectively). I think everything else is still default...

too many to count.

I use wsad for steering, left shift and left ctrl for speed. Q/E is turn left/turn right. Y and X is left and right thrusters.

I use the mouse for fine adjustments while shooting, i always use fixed lasers so thats kind of important for me.

Only thing I changed was the sensitivity of the mouse. working okay so far I to am spamming Santa for a HOTAS.

Mouse X AXIS set to YAW
Relative Mouse X AXIS - OFF
Mouse Y AXIS set to PITCH
Relative Mouse Y AXIS - OFF

Mouse Power Curve set around 80%

Mouse 1 - Primary fire
Mouse 2 - Secondary fire

Mouse 3 - Headlock
Mouse headlock set to ON

Q - Roll Left
E - Roll right

W - Thrust UP
S - Thrust DOWN
A - Thrust LEFT
D - Thrust RIGHT

O - Increase Throttle
P - Decrease Throttle
These are mapped to my two side mouse buttons.

X - Sets Speed to 0%
C - Sets Speed to 50%
Z - Sets Speed to 100%

ALT(Left) - Disable flight Assist
CTRL - Engine Boost

H - FSD to Supercruise
J - FSD to Hyperspace

R - Select highest threat
T - Select target head
Y - Curcle next subsystem
U - Deploy hardpoints
N - Cucle next fire group

I'll change some of these but right now i dont want to blow my ship in stuff because of changed key mappings.
