Keys/slider control for dashboard brightness.

Can we have those, so you can adjust the dashboard brightness quickly based on the conditions? Doing this via the panel takes time fiddling with it and it takes your attention away. Then you need to check whether it's there and if not, have to look away again to change it in the panel.

I...really don't see a situation where the function panel on right screen isn't fast enough?

It's too fiddly. I see it like this; my HOTAS and keyboard are like the dashboard buttons and controls in the cockpit. You have to operate some functions from the panels, because the panels tell you information that you otherwise might not see or know about (deactivated internal components, etc). Other functions have a direct visual result, the bar in the menu doesn't tell you as much as looking right at it while adjusting. So stuff like orbital lines are one of these that are better to be operated by a keyboard key on the fly.

I just would like to do it on the fly without to start fiddling in the menu and panel. The change on the dashboard is the indicator itself, no need to divert your view to a panel. Call it quality of life, but to me it makes sense. You could also argue why have a key for orbital lines, can do in the panel. :|

I'm curious; why do you feel you need to change the dashboard brightness?

It's been many months since I last changed that setting. Isn't it one of those set and forget kinds of changes? I'd classify the orbital lines as one of those settings too; I turned the lines off after about a week of playing and I haven't touched the setting since.

I'd like to adjust the brightness on the fly to have a good level of brightness/darkness when needed. In the dark space I'd like it more calm and less distracting and in a bright environment or during action (combat, planetary landing) I'd like to have the holo elements very well readable.

In fact, the only thing I'd like to change is the HUD (bracket, crosshair, altitude readings, etc), while the dashboard I'd prefer to always be darker, because the dashboard elements have the solid dashboard in the background and are usually always well readable, while the HUD has always changing backgrounds. So I'd like to keep the dashboard permanently darker and adjust the brightness only of the HUD on the fly. But this would be too much to ask I figured, so I went for just keys/slider to adjust dashboard brightness as it is. Having separate brightness levels of the HUD and the dashboard would be great.

As for orbital lines. I also never use those. So having a separate key for this while no real use for me (although any additional control option is very welcome), while not the brightness which I'd have a use for, is kind of unfortunate.

in space: dull, lowest brightness.
going planetary: highest brightness, in order to clearly see the coordinates and wave scanner

...that's how it works for me anyway.

Interesting. I set the brightness a little darker than the default, but it's still bright enough to be readable on a light background.

Upon reflection, wouldn't it be nice to have the brightness automatically adjust based on ambient lighting, like a smartphone? That way there's no need to fiddle with the setting. I would think technology that is available in a phone today would still be around in the year 3303.

Of course that would be great, but I don't see it happening. We'll be lucky if we just can get the simple solution.

On the other hand the automatic feature could be drawn to errors and cause some frustration. Manual adjustment is reliable. I mean I have that slider on the joystick, that I currently use to adjust the sensor range, but it would be a much better fit for the HUD brightness adjustment for me, and I'm sure others would like such feature, too.

And yes, what clivewil said basically.

Now with the new light system of Odyssey, I see this as a very important feature! I have wheels on my HOTAS I don't use, that would be pretty useful.
