Elite / Frontier Kickstarter projects - possibility for Frontier?

Not sure if anyone's heard of Kickstarter - but it's a way for companies to get paid for their projects/inventions before they are built - so they can afford to build them. (A bit like the way Minecraft was made).

Annnnway, Double Fine have used it to garner support for a new point & click adventure game.

They've raised over a million dollars (which probably isn't enough for a new Frontier game) but I think it's got to be worth Frontier Dev checking it out at least.

I'd say Tim Schafer & Ron Gilbert are names just as big as DB in the games industry.

I don't see the concept as begging either (that's quite an ignorant view of it really) - it's more getting a community involved from the start and I can see the model becoming more popular with independent developers as time goes on.

Kickstarter is only available to US residents, but if Frontier wanted to raise money for a new Frontier/Elite game I'm sure a lot of us here would pre-order and pay up front. Hell, I've been buying their other games in the hope it'll pay to a new Elite game, so I'm kind of half way there.

Kickstarter-ing isn't begging.

I don't think Kickstarter is about begging for money.

Every person who makes a "pledge" gets something out of it, whether its just having given support to make something awesome happen. If they pledge over $15 they get a copy of the game, over $30 more stuff etc.

So for pretty much any investment you will get a return.

As a gamer I am willing to fund games I think are cool, its how Minecraft got made, I've given money to other projects, expecting no return, but hoping they turn it into a cool game.

I think its the new giant killer, soon they'll try and pass laws to make it illegal in the US, internet thing.

There are loads of cool stuff I want to be done, and if I can make it happen, then I'll gladly pony up and there are thousands, hundreds of thousands of people who are willing to buy in to that.

If 2KGames wasn't remaking UFO Enemy Unknown that would be top of my list, but as that is being done so its Elite/Frontier is the next one on the list.

In any case I think its something to look into as a way to create games for Frontier.

I think Kickstarter is a great thing. My point, though, is - can you see a company like Bethesda asking Kickstarter for money? It is like admitting that you are a small developer, or in financial trouble.

I wonder how many of that 100ish are working on Elite IV

If they ever get around to doing the game them something like kickstarter would be a nice way to let the fans contribute. Pay a fiver and get a credit in the game or X amount and gets a station or planet named after you and so on.
