Kids and Elite

I also bought my son a copy when I backed Elite. First time he has logged in and played:

Using his Eagle:

'Got to be careful here Dan, don't..'
'Yep, got it Dad'
'I'll get you a HOTAS, it will be much easier.'
'Keyboard and mouse is fine'

(Successfully navigates out of space station)
(Navigates confidently to Nav Beacon.)

'You'll need to slow down to avoid overshoot'
'Yep got that'
'You need to watch out for...'
'Got it all Dad'

2 hours later, he's killed 3 NPC pirates (inc some experts) - and made 100,000 Cr

'Not quite happy with the loadout Dad - needs some adjustment'

--modern kids heh --
:)

It's so comical when you get the old forum fogeys claiming that 'the kids' can't deal with complex games and just want instant gratification. Younger minds are far more adept at learning new systems and young folks today far better at it than the older generations were as kids. Perhaps part of the reason it seems that they get bored quickly is actually because they break down the mechanics and required gameplay so much faster that they see the flaws sooner. Basically they're just better at it :)

He mainly plays strategy games: command and conquer / total war - that sort of thing. But he loves the XBone shooters too. He and his friends are very discerning about quality, and get very annoyed with inconsistencies.

He thinks the graphics in Elite are stunning, but doesn't understand the stuttering on his hi-spec machine. He loves the sound effects.

I have to say though, that having shown devastating progress in the game, when he looked at the missions on the BB in Elite, he said he didn't really understand them, or get the point..

Some might say that he has a valid point there :)

Even as a 13 year old, he has installed a little FPS counter top left on his screen, and expects something over 100! If it drops to 30 he's concerned. If a game actually stutters, he considers it shocking. Like I said, he's an XBone and PS4 player as much as PC - and these kids are *very* discerning - much more so than myself.

Please, show me an Xbone or PS4 game running at 100 FPS.

I think that a few of us old people remember games running at 24fps and anything faster was luxury!

my 18month old daughter managed to brute force her way through the lock on my phone to watch youtube video's.... how even?

Heh, my 4 year old likes to be my copilot and put the landing gear down for me. :)

Really cool!

You can flame me - but don't flame my son. Regards.

I also thought persistence of vision meant that anything over, maybe, 20 FPS was wasted - but I'm told that's not the case. It may be because it is always a running average - I'm a physicist not a biologist, so I've never really looked into it properly.

My five year old daughter counts the jumps to the destination for me, and insists we take time to look at the planet before dropping out of supercruise, then she tells me the number and points out the docking bay I have been assigned

I have an old friend for whom 'parental lock' actually means that - she has to ask her kids for the unlock code.

They are amazingly observant aren't they. Neurons not fixed and set like us I guess - very flexible in thought. Salad days - oh God.

Just a small note: show me an Xbone or PS4 that can display the frame-rate using a third party app. I was writing about his FPS expectations - not whether they were reasonable or realistic - I'm not here judging, just observing. I know you understand. Thanks
