Kill Mission Observations/Tips

So, you want to do kill missions, eh?
I've spent 10-15 hours trying to figure this system out, and made some progress but ultimately I have to conclude that most of it isn't working as intended.
With that said, these are observations and I MAY be completely off.

If you meet the following, do kill missions:
1. You want to gain reputation but don't want to trade or run deliveries.
2. You're okay with making less credits than many other activities provide.
3. You have at least 45 minutes to an hour to dedicate to the game.

Rules and Tips:
1. Never do bounty hunters or traders - it's not worth it.
The payout is the same as pirates, the only difference being bounty hunters/traders will give you a wanted status (Unless their wanted, which is rare) and reputation loss.

2. Go to the right panel and under functions, set firing to TARGET ONLY.

3. Don't use gimballed pulse lasers - they appear to auto fire once locked on, which is a good way to hit feds or bystanders in the line of fire.
Right now I'm running three gimballed multi cannons that fire on my discretion.

4. USS's seem to appear randomly, and the distance from your ship appears to be calculated by a percentage of your current speed.
What this means is pick a fixed object, say the main system star, and travel at the minimum speed - when the USS's spawn, you'll already be within safe disengage range. No travel time.
This maximizes how many USS's you can hit in a span of time.

If anyone has any corrections or information to provide on this topic, please do.
This has been an uphill battle for me the last few days, but I really want to climb up in Federation rep.
