Kill Warrant Scanner Engineering

Quick question please...

What is generally considered to be the “best” KWS engineering?

For example, should I go A rated and make it lightweight, or D rated and make it long distance?

Im sure someone out there has put a spreadsheet together to work this all out and get the optimal result...

Thanks all

I regularly wing up with a friend for haz RES bounty hunting, we both have FDLs with a C1 KWS. I have fast scan, they have long range. They usually beat me to complete the scan.

It's personal preference, but I like Fast Scan which I tie to my main fire group so I can shoot and scan at the same time as quick as possible in those first few moments I start shooting first. Lightweight is useless and Long Range narrows your scan and chews more power.

Personally I went for fast scan but I pondered long-range as well. It was really just a random choice.

I only use lightweight for explorer ships or trading vessels where less jumps = faster trading.

If you are hunting bounties (ie not going for an extra booster!) of course, then like other replies, I definitely recommend fast scan.

Goes from 10s to 2s, and if you use an A rated kws, the range only drops from 4km to 3km. Many people tag it to a fire button which is a great idea - I use a separate fire group, with beams on the second button, to help strip shields when starting a scrap, mainly because when I was new I had a skill for shooting them just before the id resolved, so getting into trouble lol!

It's personal preference how you set it up, but I'd definitely go fast scan mate.

Thanks for the answers everyone.

I really like that there is a difference of opinion, engineering with a genuine choice it seems. Good!

Although this:-
A rated shield booster

I really don’t need more shields when I’m bounty hunting. They never go down! Would rather have the free cash thank you.

Think I’ll go A rated, fast scan

Fast scan by a country mile.

As for the rating, whatever your power plant supports. Power draw on utility scanners is doubled per grade while the range increases are linear.
The weight barely makes a difference.

Even an E-rated KWS with G5 fast scan will be able to get better range than whatever you're using to strip their shields, and it'll probably take longer than two seconds to do so, so just bind them both to the same trigger and Robert's your mother's brother.

Fast Scan feels quick, so that's what I use regardless of which is actually faster. I fly fast and manoeuvrable ships though - maybe in a big lethargic thing long range is noticeably better, I don't know.

LR is sometimes faster in some really niche edge-cases, but those cases are essentially:
1: it'll take you more than 8 seconds to close the distance to get a fast scanner into range (in which case, you'll still need to close the distance to fight them)
2: you want to pick out a target while you're waiting for your collectors to scoop up the remains of the last guy you blew up.

For wake scanning I went with fast as well, since wakes outside a station are rarely far enough away from each other to make the extra range worth it, and occasionally grouped together enough to scan several at once without moving much - and you can make up for a lack of range by building a faster ship, while there's no other way to mitigate scan time besides... well, the fast scan blueprint.

I can't be sitting around waiting to shoot someone while the scanner spins its wheels!

When that "wanted" pops up, it's showtime, besides they draw power that can be put to use for killin' somethin'!
