Kill Warzone fighters.... wha?

I was in a Federation system, at a Federation port and I accepted a mission to go kill 4 'warzone' fighters in another system, to be found in conflict zones.

So I thought, okay, cool, why not...

Then I get there and I see maybe 20 or so Federation naval ships all shooting at each other... nobody else, just Federation naval ships...

It's worth noting that I am friendly with the Federation, and I have a rank of Ensign, and I'm also allied with the system and station from which I got the mission. I wasn't about to target and shoot at any Federation naval vessels and possibly screw up my good standing with them...

Could somebody please tell me what that was all about? What was I supposed to do, if anything, and why would a Federation station give me a mission to take out other Federation ships?

I had expected maybe some bad guys would show up, but I waited around and nobody but Federation ships came and went. I suspect that some of them actually were 'the bad guys', at least in the opinion of one side or the other, but again, I wasn't about to shoot any Federation ships, and even if I wanted to, I had no idea how to figure out who my mission-giver considered to be the bad guys...

Thanks. :D

They might have been two different subfactions within federation fighting each other, small local civil war or something.

Don't sweat it, pick a side and start killing. I had this before, and it didn't seem to give me any naughty red arrows at the time, or after handing in. In my case, both sides were imps- different minor factions, and I seemed not to lose imp rep, FWIW.

It's extremely confusing, though, I agree.

Yeah, you need to choose a faction in the right control panel - just like a combat zone, then kill the relevant number of (red) ships...

It doesn't matter which side you choose afaik, just kill 'em :)

Don't forget to cash in the combat bonds at the local station before jumping back and claiming the mission at your home station. ;)

EDIT: ninja'd

Okay, thanks guys! :D
I had a feeling it was something like that, but of course the game never tells you anything at all.
I abandoned that mission since I wasn't sure what to do. Only had like an hour or so left anyway, but next time I won't worry about it.
