It had to happen eventually, a commander in a clipper jumped my Asp (and handed it to me) last night, lost an evening of scanning and three mission critical items.
Since 2.4 hit I have been having a blast, PvP had some consequences applied now the pilots federation was issuing bounties for player killing PvP outside Powerplay. I did have to declare allegiance again....a nice touch notification I am PvP by choice.
The Thargoids are now interacting with commanders and making the region a little more dangerous for pilots in UUS and even hyperspace jumps. I have been aware and following the Thargoid/alien storyline, but never found time to prioritise it until the patch 2.4 was released.
Exploring ,not discovering is my speciality…once The “Honk and hightail heroes” have jumped through a system to log it with their name it’s down to the real workers to scan the system for useful information.
So, how did Thargoids, Exploring, and pilot federation bounties get me killed by a commander ?...
It all started when I took a passenger transport mission that ended close to Maia….Maia system vicinity and Patch 2.4 was the perfect storm I never saw coming. I had noticed a lot of the local systems around Maia had been ‘Honked’ but not Explored….My multi purpose Asp is fitted with all the latest tech for passenger comfort , surface landings and optional tours for any passenger that can hold onto the outside wearing a vac suit. Anyway….I am also loaded for information…..you want something scanned I am your commander. So I set about scanning the systems keeping a lookout at the amount of commanders around me.
But I did not need to worry because everyone was here for some Thargoid interaction, I started to visit the USS alien activity sites too….very nice feature Frontier, I am impressed. Because I do not carry anything Thargoid in my hold they scanned me and resumed their activity…..only deploying the tharglets to warn me off if I got too close. I did manage to scoop up an escape pod in one of the encounters….it was later I realised the Thargoids were using their tractor beam to collect the black boxes and escape pods. So I started to scoop the black boxes and escape pods wherever I could get in safely. This led me to pick up black box missions when I docked At Obsidian station…..so I was making creds exploring as well as picking up black box missions…awesome!!!
I also came across the information beacons and landed to explore an crashed Thargoid surrounded by their sensors still scanning when I approached…scary stuff.
I did pick up a couple but they were giving me corrosive damage….so I dropped them out of the buggy and shot them for the pieces that I will make use of later. Plus I did not want to be carrying any Thargoid tech around Thargoid encounters.
Which brings me to the sad part of my story….my encounter and destruction by a commander in the Maia system, On my jump into the Maia system a thargoid pulled me out of my friendship drive jump and shut down all my systems…..I was really…I mean….REALLY glad I had not loaded up with alien probes now. He scanned me and left me alone…sweating in my ice covered cabin. Powered up the drives and completed my jump to Maia….and the computer (orion of voice attack) warned me it’s a pirate area….take extra care. So I duly ignored the warning and focused on refuelling to save me 100 creds at the station, Yes I really am that serious about saving creds. And checked my cargo hold that held the black boxes to complete three missions….and A full system explored was going to be a reasonable payday…….that is when the interdiction got my attention. No big deal I though., it will be the ant hill wanting one ton of cargo…and I had been boosting away from them, or dropping unwanted 1 ton items for a couple of days now.
I turned and saw the interdiction was not going to well for the attacker, so I decided to throw it off and evade it…that is when I saw it was a clipper, and the thought now crossed my mind , is it a commander ??? . I tried to evade but I had left it too long and pushed the odds against me, so I submitted…..what a dumb move that was in reflection….I was right next to the sun, I should have fought the interdiction and probably got away ( I think he was fitted with a low rated by the effort it took him to catch me), and if I could not get away I could have dropped us both close to the sun ….i had plenty of heatsinks, and it would have limited his energy weapon use…which he was loaded up with, predictable!!!. So my apathy and lack of situational awareness had led me into a combat I neither wanted or needed.
As we spun into normal space I remembered………I AM DECLARED PVP……and the panic set in…what about my scanning data, my cargo essential for the missions…all that time exploring…..when I should have been preparing for the battle. So I did what every good prey does for a predator.. I ran!!!....what a dumb stupid move on my part.
I had an agile ship and chaff mounted….after a few seconds boosting with shields on full, I was throwing out chaff like confetti at a wedding. I was boosting and turning to throw his aim off more…and it was working as my drives spooled up to jump…which was my next dumb move. I was going to low wake out….which was taking forever as I was mass locked. I was watching it powering up slowly thinking to myself…..I really should be jumping out of the system and then I don’t have to deal with mass lock. I was still thinking this as my ship exploded around me….What an idiot was all I could think as I watched my ship flying off in different directions.
So…Thanks to Patch 2.4 and all it’s new features and content…I found myself floating in space….and that is the cause for my claim on my insurance form!!!
