Have been playing solo since I started. Was leaving Elviras after upgrading FSD in my new Cobra MK5 as soon as I lifted off was hit by fire shields were destroyed instantly tried evading , hard to do at ground level, but ship was being ripped apart and died in less than 5 seconds. Said I was killed by CMDR xxxx I thought only humans were CMDR's not NPC's.

Thinking back I thought when I started the game it seemed to skip over the mode screen, it just blinked, and went to the load game screen. May have been a double click on the mouse in the first screen and the open mode is in the same spot on the next screen. Would be nice if the load game button said Load Solo Game or Load Open game. Learned a lesson though that open mode isn't worth playing with jerk offs like that CMDR killing beginners just to be an ass.
This is almost definitely what you experienced. I've accidently done this myself, several times.
Yeah, sometime it registers your click as a double click, maybe a bit of lingering or twitch of your finger and it always logs you into open because that's where your mouse is resting at the time, a little bit annoying but I always play in open so it doesn't affect me, but some it might.
Although not really beginner friendly, if you look at your journal files it should tell you what mode you are/ were in IIRC at the time of your detonation. But from the sound of it you accidentally went into Open.
