Killed the pirate 2x for federal navy?

Mission was to kill the pirate.

  • Went to the system, located the target.
  • Killed him, got bounty credits.
Suddenly, mission 2 spawned in the same system and I was told to follow certain commander in another system for valuable data. I did. He told me where to find the pirate... that I just killed.
Anyway, I went there, killed him for a 2nd time and got the reward. This time, my mission was officially complete. Got my next rank.

So what was wrong for the 1st time? Why it didn't count? Could it be that the final blow 1st time was done by NPCs that also hunted him?

Are you sure it was the same pirate? I have had assasination missions that tell me i got the wrong guy and to meet with an informant for new instrustions?

Same here, I've had that occur in 3 or 4 pirate assassination missions over the past few weeks. The first time I had the same confusion as you @maboleth.

This mission type (assassinate pirate lord) has multiple bugs. It always starts the same - go to system X and kill pirate, but once you arrive there are multiple options:

1. Mission USS is generated, you enter it and it contains the pirate - marked as mission target. Kill pirate, mission complete.

2. Pirate appears in supercruise and interdicts you. If the interdiction works (there's a bug that sometimes the interdicting NPC ship disappears), you can kill the pirate, mission complete. However, the mission still also spawns a USS which contains another copy of the mission target. If you avoid the interdiction and go to USS, you can end up with two copies of the same pirate (usually the same ship type, but can have different ship names). Both are considered mission targets and killing either one completes the mission.

3. There is a "wrinkle" that says the target is gone and you are sent to a different system to make contact with a random NPC which will send you to yet another system where you actually find the target. In this case, the game still generates the mission USS in the original system, with the pirate lord in it, but this time it is not marked as mission target and killing it doesn't do anything. I believe it even generates new USS with a new copy after each kill, but still not a mission target.

And no, I'm not going to enter this in the bug tracker. I had pretty bad experience with reporting bugs to FDev in the past and it is not my job to do this.

So I got #3. Thanks so much on detailed possible scenarios of what could happen to assassination missions. :D I will do the work for you and write a bug report. Not sure I will have enough of "likes" so it will probably end up in the recycle bin. :cautious:

I'm sure. I thought the same. Well NecasekO explained why it happened. I only wonder if having NPCs kill the pirate has something to do with game not recognizing it as my kill, even though I got the bounty credits for it...

Many people are doing it wrong. I see that all the time, even by professionals. Always, ALWAYS poke it with a stick. If it moves, shoot some more, then poke again. Repeat as often as necessary.

I believe I've had this issue too at some point. If the mission target gets killed by someone else, it doesn't count.

The game should spawn a new mission USS as soon as you go into supercruise, but it may be pretty far depending on the size of the system you're in.

If you want this fixed- tell Frontier that it's an exploit that pretty much guarantees g5 mats in a single uss location (assuming you pick an elite rank mission) which lasts 24 hours before despawning. Just keep killing the Corvette.

If you poke it with a stick it will always find a way to sucker you into thinking it's not about half a second away from leaping up the stick and eating you.

Never poke it with a stick.
... nuke it from orbit. Then nuke the stick.
