Killed while in galaxy map.

Yesterday I was finished doing some mining, and was all alone in the asteroid belt, when I decided to look around the galaxy map for other mining locations nearby. Now I didn't have my headset on because I was just finishing up for the day, but after looking at the galaxy map for about 10 minutes the screen flashed and it was me dying. I don't know if I didn't see the indicators that I was being attacked, but I kind of think there should be some VERY visual indicator that you are under attack if you are in the map screen. Possibly there was an audio indication, but I didn't have my headset on, and that shouldn't be the only indicator, I think if you are on the system or galaxy map and you are attacked it should force you back to the cockpit or put a VERY noticeable alert on screen. thanks.

You couldn't hear it (headset off), and went to the galaxy map in a potentially unsafe area?

Honestly mate, there is no issue with the game here.

Keep headset on?
Don't open galaxy map in a potentially unsafe area?
Anything else I miss?

The other way of looking at it is to think of accessibility for deaf players. Yes the game would be much less rich without sound but with the right visual clues it should still be OK for those with hearing issues. So - yes you could say never fly without a headset on but I would agree some form of visual notification of peril should also exist.

There's plenty of visual cues if you don't have your face buried in the galaxy map :)

Yeah because if a deaf guy was piloting a ship and looking at a map, he would have absolutely no idea his ship is being destroyed. Yep, that's not stupid at all.

The lengths people go to avoid acknowledging areas of improvement within the game are astounding.

Especially not for 10 minutes. He basically took a nap and is wondering why he's dead now. No amount of visual or audio clues will help with this kind of situation.

Players need to take some personal responsibility for their actions and consequences and not blame the game for every mistake they make.

If your ships computer can give audio tones to say that you are under attack I think the same software could overlay "under attack" on your galaxy map. It was just something that I didn't think of until it happened to me. I know there are may reasons why not to look at a galaxy map while out in the verse, but in the year 3300 I think a visual note isn't too much to ask for.

And feel free to be astounded! :)

I find it astounding that someone was out in a mining belt, staring at the galaxy map for 10 minutes, and wondered why they got blown away! :)

no, I'm not whining, I'm just stating fact, and I was somewhat surprised that there was no indicator, now I know to not check my gps enroute. If me posting this helps another pilot before it happens to them, then great. If the devs feel it would be a good idea then even better. I am not griefing or whining, just sharing an experience. I hate being rammed by an npc anaconda worse than this, I'll take them blame in this.

It certainly could not hurt if there was some kind of visual cue in the galaxy map if the ship is under attack, an interdiction for example just "drags" you back to the cockpit, why not do the same when being shot at?

This is actually a damn good reason for having some warning flash up while in the galaxy map.

Dont forget to tie your shoe laces ...

Although I suspect by 3300 those back to the future nike ones are probably all the rage ... In which case dont forget to press the button on your shoes!

Amen to that, Commander. :)

Please explain how you get around without opening the Galaxy map, maybe I missed something.

seems you really earned that.

i make sure i'm mostly safe (not in harms way) and keep the time on the map short - preferably i do it when docked.

Remember that apocryphal story about the guy that buys a huge Winnebago and crashes it almost immediately?
The dealer tells him it has cruise control and is so comfortable it'll seem like it drives itself.
So the guy drives out into the desert on the way to Vegas and decides he wants a drink from the 'bago's kitchen. Cruise control on.
He gets out of his seat and fetches himself a drink. A few moments after he does so the 'bago veers off the road and rolls over and over smashing itself to pieces and killing the "driver".

What happened?
The driver was not in control of their vehicle and paid the ultimate price.
If he wanted to do something other than fly the ship he should have docked at a station or halted in normal space so he could not be attached or interdicted. And then fetched himself that drink.

Your analogy would be more like I was in super cruise, went to galaxy map, then flew into a sun or planet. a comparable analogy would be I pulled the winnebego over and was stopped, went to have a crap, and while in there, my winnebego was assaulted and exploded by pirates. The side of the road in space is just more dangerous........

And if he wanted to check the map to make sure of his route he should stop his vehicle and... oh wait :p
