Kind of regret trading in my 250k worth eagle for a cobra

I was a bounty hunter but wanted a bit tougher ship, upgraded my cobras weapons but turn speeds are so slow that I do worse against pythons than with a eagle. Do thrusters make your turn speeds better? Unfortunately I don't have enough money left but just wanna know.

Yes upgrading your thrusters will make the ship a fair bit better in terms of turn speed.

None of the ships (potentially apart from the Sidewinder) come with a decent starting loadout, but once you've spent the time and credits to upgrade it the Cobra is a great ship.

Cobra is the destoyer, If you know how to use em.

My advice, if you plan to make a combat cobra, don't get one till you have 1 million+ credits+ existing kitted out ship because the cobra's upgrades are pricey.

The Cobra turns into more of a fighter role once you upgrade the thrusters, yes.
Also, reduce its weight, get a smaller fuel tank for example.

insurance on my cobra is around 396k credits, so... about 10million to kit it out in full.

When you upgrade to a new ship it comes with only basic stuff, it costs a lot to upgrade to its best performance.

They do. Not just turning speed, but also acceleration and deceleration rate, and improved lateral and vertical control.

While I now realise this isn't the thread about it, the thread title reminded me that this game can be a cruel thing sometimes. Since even beta 2, it's made me feel really bad about buying a new ship after trading in a ship I've carefully crafted and raised as either a trader, a fighter, an explorer, a miner, etc. in exchange for a supposedly "better" model. But by sticking with the new ship and carefully allowing it to grow by itself, it grows on you too. Fortunately, the ability to own more than one ship has alleviated those feelings a lot. :)

I prefer the Cobra over the Eagle. With a good shield, shield cells, and a power distributor, it can tank a Python while dishing out lots of damage. I've never had issues with its turn rate. I've fought 5 (NPC) ships at once in the Cobra and came out on top, mainly by destroying Eagles in less than two seconds, then moving onto the Cobras.

You can just sell your ship and components and buy the eagle back if you liked it better... or just play a couple of weeks and re-earn that money. That's the great thing ... nothing is forever. You can experiment with everything in due time.

In all honesty an upgraded Cobra will always walk all over an upgraded Eagle, but here is the rub, to fully upgrade a Cobra will cost you in the millions, and to get to it you need to bypass the Cobra asap and get a Lakon 6, trade your ass off until you have 4-5 million in the bank, then kit out your Cobra to beast most things in NPC combat. As it should be though, if you intend on attacking player ships, if they have upgraded them (aka Asp etc) expect to get your ass kicked, excepting bad piloting.

Yesterday I got into a tangle with a Python, I jetted past him, set flight assist off and turned to face him as he fired salvo after salvo of missiles.
I stood back, sniping the missiles as they came in. The ones that got past me did little damage to the shields which quickly recharged.
Once he'd depleted his stock, I moved in for the kill. The Cobra is a beast, not the most maneuverable one but enough to fight any ship and come out on top.

You think I should trade it in now and use the money to buy better stuff for viper?

in all honesty, i would stick with the viper for a longer time. having gone from a decent viper to a cobra, i was a little dismayed- the cobra hardpoint convergence is terrible, forcing you to use at least 2 gimballed weapons, which are always a dps loss. the components are also a lot more expensive as well- i believe you always get full price back from selling components, but not the hull, so fully fitting a viper and swapping to a cobra won't cost you much, nor will swapping back.

Also, it's not just the class/size of thrusters, but also the relation between current weight and thruster optimal weight- eg A thrusters with optimal of 250 and current hull mass of 245 won't be as good as B thrusters with optimal of 240 and current hull mass of 220. (just an example, not actual numbers aside from the ratio, of course)
