Kissing the sky E:D setup

Obsessively playing the original Elite pretty much defined a chunk of my childhood, and I heavily played all the sequels, and still play Oolite frequently.

For the last few years I haven't really played games much except minecraft, which I play probably too much, but I intend to become obsessed with immersion into E:D.

Therefore, please forgive me but I wish to kiss the sky with a setup that I can't currently even afford to have, but would like to work towards, assuming the game even supports some of the things I'd like to do.

What I'd like, eventually and built up over time maybe, is to build myself a proper cockpit setup, with three large displays for an elongated forward view, with a bank of tablets under the screens all running as MFDs (multi-function displays) configurable to show rear, side, and top/bottom views, systems statuses, system map, comms, and maybe the radar (although that might be better served centre of the main front view). All these MFDs changeable on the fly through touchscreen controls as and when needed. A bank of something like four to six tablets, in a line under the three main displays would be best, and would allow a couple of obvious frequent use screens to be more or less permanent, like rear view and systems status, leaving a few other MFDs for situational use.

I'd like a comfy bucket seat, decent flight stick and throttle system, with precision flight controls, lateral thrusters, etc. and I'd like to sit in that setup, fully immersed in the Elite universe, flying around until I whither away and die.

Good luck with your endeavour - sounds like an awesome idea - just don't forget the rotary fan as with all them screens it's going to get warm :)

One thing I would suggest is to create a blog documenting and highlighting your efforts so that others may learn, and possibly advise you, on your dream.

Big fan of the idea of tablets for touch screen control/display panels.

Not a fan of multiple monitor setups though. The screen breaks/bezels annoy me, rather one large display with high resolution or the upcoming Oculus Rift (thought hat makes the touch screen tablets a problem lol).

Good luck though. I do believe that flight games are deserving of such grand ideas, ever since the awesome After Burner in the arcades!

I completely agree with the bezels between small screens being a problem, which is why I wasn't thinking of small screens. I was actually thinking of three large screens, say 40" or thereabouts, running in at least 1080p (maybe 4k in the future).

Just one screen like this would be more than enough for an exceptional experience playing a game like E:D, three of them would be serious overkill.

It's not really enough just to thoroughly enjoy being a pilot flying in a galaxy simulator, it needs to be bordering on a requirement for getting professional help. I've been waiting a very long time for this, and many other games have promised it, but fell well short of the mark for various reasons. Even Eve Online was just a point at click spreadsheet "game". I want to be a pilot!

Big thanks to everyone commenting so far. See you all on a trash dumping run to the Slough system...

Have a look at what I've done at

It's now basicly complete, I am half way through final assembly. But my kids are wanting attention today, so maybe later tonight I'll have it finished and pictures up.

You are using 3 Samsung SyncMaster 740 BF's? I had two of those, one died and I replaced it with a wide screen. So I have one left in this strange dual monitor setup.

I checked your progress. Nice stuff. Now what you need is some black cloth and make a frame around the lot to make it look like the inside of a pit. And you need an airco.

I often thought about doing that. Hehe. As a kid I used to sleep in boxes. I would take the biggest box, put it where my pillows were, put the pillows inside and use a spread over it to create a sort of cave or cockpit. I took a battery and a 3V bulb from the headlight on a bicycle to have some light.

I should do a cloth-on-frame system. In winter the sun shines on my screen sometimes, which is annoying. And it will help a bit with immersion.

Plus...it will save you money, such a setup heats up. You won't have to heat up your gaming room. Good for our climate too.

This is my dream too! Unfortunately i have to wait until we move house so i have the room :( but i've already bagsied a spare room or garage :p

I posted this link a little while ago, but if you haven't see it i highly recommend a look... its one of the best ones i've seen (for Mechwarrior Online) and has tons of great ideas

I like your idea about the tablets running MFDs, but for me its going to be more hands-on with buttons and toggle switches. If you want anything like that i'd recommend an iPac, which is used mostly by arcade machine builders, but is a really easy way of wiring a button or switch to simulate a keypress

You must be able to read my mind. I am a big fan of MFD's too and I really hope that Elite supports them. They are brilliant to use in flight sims and would be great in Elite Dangerous.

[EDIT] Also, a rear view camera positioned at the top/middle of the cockpit window would be nice also. They work well in racing games and I think this would be a nice feature in the game.

This set up looks great.

With regards to MFD, they sound like they could really help with the UI but would need tons of development from FD to make them functional.

Maybe this is something that could be added at a later expansion.

I had similar, but smaller like-minded idea and you have just expanded on it.

I was thinking of having, multiple screens for each view of the ship and then I saw this while looking for the Flightstick.....

Dream-Flyer

Though, after some thought, (As I found this nearly a week ago.) I figured it's better suited to real gravity bound plane and helicopter flight simulators.

Besides, I would really want one that's spins around completely on every axis like one of these.....

I'm not even clear how that should work in a weightless environment like space.

I assume that none of the smaller ships like the Cobra, and Sidewinder generate artificial gravity.

They don't always spin.

What I'm trying to explain is that I not sure of the effects of spinning slowly as you manoeuvre your ship. I'm not sure if it would be the same in space as I might be within our everyday atmosphere.

Hi Tom,

You're thinking along the right lines but if i may be so bold your implementation is wrong. What you need is holodeck google CastAR. I'm looking forward to using this as it will give you the view whilst letting you also see the controllers etc...

Great idea! I've seen some of the setups a Flightsim mate of mine had, analogue dials and CB radio-looking stuff everywhere - really cool looking but made no sense to me. Everyday I like my dashboards to be small and effective, I really don't need much else apart from revs, speed, neutral, high-beam, turn, oil pressure, temperature, kickstand - the usual idiot lights.

However, when gaming - I'd like as much information available as possible! Especially as I'm sitting in a comfy seat and don't have to actually risk my life :)

I'd like to add touchscreens too, but the cost even for a 8" USB touchscreen is outrageous! Seriously I'm looking at over $250 for a piddly little device. It's not the money, it's the crapness!

What I would ideally like to see, given that I hope to eventually have my 32" screen, two 23" screens at the side, all 1080 16:9 so there is no aspect problem - is add a touchscreen or two below them, or to the side of my keyboard / keypad setup.

Ideally these would show additional information / control options from the cockpit and not "UI windows" as the devs have said they are not following that route.

I'm thinking a couple of cheap ipads or android land-fill tablets plugged into USB and some app that allows you to select functions, and use them as a supplementary control.

Even little details in these displays would make for great immersion. System effectiveness, heatsink efficiency, power routing displays, the button to turn on purple alert, and another button to change the bulb etc.

It'd be awesome!

Of course, if ED controls everything in a visual way, having a keypad/keyboard/mouse/touchscreen setup may well not work at all the way I intend. We'll just have to wait and see :)

With slightly less than fifty hours to go on their Kick-Starter.

I tempted to pledge for their Pro-Package, but I'm really saving for new computer.

A great starting point for your project would be to visit here: http://www.obutto-uk.com/
I can highly recommend the seat they provide. It is extremely comfortable, even over hours of continuous use.

That looks awesome and more within my price range. Though I suspect that providing they could ship to Australia. The shipping charge might ruin me.

They're Triple-Monitor-Mount in now out of stock :(

Yeah, I didn't realise the exchange at first. That's is a lot of money. I wonder if Australia has local company that makes anything similar.
