Newcomer / Intro Kitting Out My Sidewinder

What are the priorities when kitting out my Sidewinder, is there a tutorial on this somewhere ?

I think I will sell my FreEagle so don't want to waste money by buying less important things first.

If I was you I would ditch the Sidey (you can always get another free...at least I think you still can) and spend cash tricking out the Eagle. Stick 2 x gimballed multicannons on the Eagle and a Kill Warrant Scanner when you can afford them. Then get into a Resource Extraction Point and start racking up bounties. Upgrade to a Hauler when you have enough cash or wait a bit and go to the Adder (more combat capable). I love the Sidewinder and spent some time tricking it out, but the Eagle is much faster in combat...just watch your power consumption on it. If you want to run 3 weapons you may need to upgrade power plant. If you can find some larger cargo bays the Sidewinder can be used for smuggling/selling stuff on black market. I've been playing through Beta-Gamma-Release. I sold my Eagle but somewhat regret it but I needed the cash to get the Hauler...which is dire for combat unless you spend a fortune on A class bits, and if you have the money for that you would most likely want a Cobra.

I'd always first look at power. The Sidewinder has a good enough generator, so look at the power distributor first. You should be able to get a C1 or C2 (always forget which) that gives you all blue numbers in the comparison and comes at a really good price, so you can boost more frequently, and your shields and weapons are both markedly improved.

After that, it's a matter of taste. You can upgrade many systems with a minimal impact on weight, so you can look at your needs; you can upgrade thrusters for better maneuvering in normal space, or the FSD to increase jump range, upgrade the shield generator for obvious reasons, and so on. Just make sure your "deployed" power draw is covered by the generator and your jump range doesn't get too short.

The Eagle can be upgraded quite decently (I was running almost all C rating, the two loaner lasers on the bottom and a gimbaled multicannon on top) which produces quite the durable little beast for under 100k credits. If you want to do combat, that'd be the option I'd recommend.

Depends a lot on what you intend to do, trade, bounty, pirate, explore. First thing I did was ditch the scanner and upgrade the cargo.

Gimballed weapons are the best to go for if you want the weapons to auto track the target.

I'd recommend that you, as soon as you got familiar with the controls, avoid gimballed weapons.
Fixed ones are a little more powerful, far more precise but most importantly can't be shut down by chaff launchers.

What he said. Upgraded distributor is definitely the first thing to do to a sidey.

It depends on what you want to do with your Sidewinder. My goal was to upgrade to a hauler asap, so I sold my Freagle, completed a few easy missions and purchased a hauler.

Gimballed weapons are a must if you're a scrub like me who misses with 2 out of 3 shots when trying to take on other fighters. Got a gimballed multi-cannon and gimballed pulse laser and even though the multicannon has to lead the target I can easily hit with both weapons, I completely shred smaller targets quite easily.

If you're like me and feel fine sticking with a sidewinder for a while I upgraded my phase shift drive so I can travel farther, initially I was locked into a very small set of systems, got a new drive that lets me jump almost 3 times as far.

Didn't think about power distributor, going to get that next.
