KWS and holding down during scan - solved

Well, my annoyance with KWS use has been solved.

Without rehashing too much but giving solution to those like minded, my core objection was not whether KWS was:

  • financially worth it (it is)
  • having to use actively vs passive scan if module mounted (prefer yes, but not even in top-10 for changes priority)
  • lacking ergonomics / design with inability to assign 3rd fire group or key binding / toggle

Core objection was the strain on just having to hold whichever mouse button assigned for kws for the 10 seconds + the dogfight time losing track which usually equated (for me) to 20+ seconds of holding down right mouse button.

So solved issue by simply remembering my Diablo 3 days and using same solution as then - programmable mouse with left/right click set as toggle so it stays held down, or use of software that does the say (e.g. autokey)

Still wish for either bullet #2 or 3 to eventually come via game updates, but if anyone is like me and just not using kws because of the extra strain of use, I'd recommend a prog mouse or autokey software

KWS scan continues through fire group change. Bind it to the same button in two fire groups, one with guns and another without and as the target moves out of your crosshairs change fire group without releasing the fire button.

FG1: First stage trigger = Lasers +KWS, second stage adds MCs.
FG2: First stage trigger = KWS (and interdictor)

Target enemy with FG2, hold trigger. When basic scan completes switch to FG1 and start stripping shields, scan continues. If target evades, switch to FG2 to conserve energy, holding trigger, scan continues.

Good tip Rustyleg, I didn't realise one could do that, never tried but shall set a few groups up so I can move my hotas pov left and right changing firegroups whilst holding fire down. Good tips for a mouse user in OP too.

Edit: hold on I know now why I haven't ever tried, I've "confirm" in the UI as FIRE. Perhaps I'll change it :) (Another edit: then again that makes no difference, I'll shut up now)

That's good tip, and works with some weapon loudest. But for others, since we don't have 3rd fire group trigger - e.g. mouse 3 - but just ability to make more fire groups (which is good but not as good as more fire groups + more fire triggers (mouse 1, 2, 3, 4, etc))

For those with weapons that can all efficiently work bound to the same fire group - then sure, you could fire them all using 1 trigger - and scan with the other, and like you said - switch to trigger #2 with only kws/interdictor when enemy moves out of site. But that forces / leaves us with only one fire group for all weapons - OR - make two fire groups for separated weapons and a 3rd fire group for the kws/interdictor

Viable, and I'm sure some people do that. Especially those that use not only mixed weapon type load outs but mixed tracking types - fixed and gimble thermal + fixed and gimble kinetic or whatever combo that produces more than 2 likely weapon group pairs

Seems just a heck of a lot easier to have an easy toggle (via the workaround I suggested - programmable mouse that retains mouse down mode unless clicked again, or software like autokey)
