General / Off-Topic Labour leadership

Absolutely. The true issue is whether you allow any Johnny-come-lately with a few quid to have a voice in such a decision, or whether you keep it in the hands of proven, committed stakeholders. The same would apply to any organisation controlled by its members.

Completely agree. Sadly, since that is the system, we can either work with it or let the minority win.

Personally I take the position that being electable, by current standards, isn't relevant or democratic.

It's about policies. Ultimately, how these are presented.

The current tendency for Labour to run around, chasing whatever issue they think will get them elected has led to them being little different from the Torys.

Labour leadership contender Jeremy Corbyn has suggested Tony Blair could be made to stand trial for war crimes over the invasion of Iraq.

"Is he going to be tried for it? I don't know," he told Newsnight's Emily Maitlis. "Could he be tried for it? Possibly."

"It was an illegal war... and he [Tony Blair] has to explain to that."

Labour "missed a trick" over the way it allowed people to register to vote for the new party leader, deputy leadership candidate Stella Creasy has said.

New rules mean "affiliated supporters" who have donated £3 to the party can take part in the voting process alongside regular members.

Labour has been taking action to prevent other parties' members voting.

Donations of those whose applications are rejected will not be refunded, a party spokesman said.

Hmm. Have I wasted 3 quid? :D

We shall see. If I don't get back saying I have a ballot paper, then assume I have.

Worrying that people who'd "miss a trick" such as this, are a potential party of government...

... not because of their intentions, but because of their inability to see such an obvious unintended consequence.

Agreed.

But perhaps with a new leadership they can put in a better performance.

This country needs an opposition for its democracy to survive. The current champagne group, dominating the only real opposition party in this country votes for government legislation, even when they don't need to! That is just disgraceful.

In any case, it there will be plenty of time for Corbyn to prove himself.

Labour moves to the 'left', what does the 'right' of the party do?

Look out for a group of four MPs sneaking around and then suddenly announcing a new party, perhaps called the 'Social Democrats'.

Maybe in ten years time following a merger, we'll have a party called the 'Liberal Democratic Democrats'.

I am on record as supporting Corbyn for the Labour Leadership and even joining the Labour Party, as an associate, for the first time in my life.

On his first major outing as leader he failes to even have conference discuss one of his central issues, Trident and then goes on TV and tells a pack of lies.

I and others have attempted to raise these points on a large Corbyn Supporter's page on Facebook and been banned. On other Corbyn pages, we have simply been ignored.

Is this the shape of things to come?

Is Corbyn just Blair with Hair?

From his Andrew Marr interview:

The SNP are privatising CalMac.”

Not true.

“[The SNP] were behind privatisation of ScotRail.”

Not true. Britain’s railways (including Scotland’s) were privatised by the Tories under the Railways Act 1993. The Scottish Parliament didn’t even exist at the time.

“[they're] also cutting college places”

“[they're] also cutting local government funding”
